1988 911 Carrera 3.4 Oil Leak
Hi Everyone,
New member here. My father was a relatively active member here, his handle was 88-diamondblue, and sadly, he passed away last year. I have inherited his 1988 911 Diamond Blue CE Carrera 3.4 HC3.4. I decided to register here in hopes to learn more about the vehicle through my father’s posts and to get some helpful information from individuals that have more technical knowledge than myself. Right before he passed, he had sent the car out to install front and rear bushings which included other miscellaneous items that were requested and recommended based on inspection of the vehicle. After I received the vehicle there was a new oil leak that developed. From my understanding the only work that was completed on the engine was a valve adjustment and replacing the leaking oil return tubes along with an oil change which was recommended by the vendor based on the initial inspection. It took some time to take possession of the vehicle as I lived out of state and has only seen a limited amount of driving since the service. Approximately 250 miles driven where most of the miles were from the return trip immediately after the service and short drive to my garage more recently. I would like to get the oil leak fixed and drive it before I store it for Winter. The current oil level is in between the low and high level mark on the dipstick. The oil was changed during the service and that is amount of oil that has leaked out since. Below is a picture where the oil leak appears to be coming from. ![]() I am hoping to identify what the fix is, potential cost to fix, and any recommendations for a mechanic located in southeastern South Dakota or if I should look out of state. In the meantime, would there be any issues adding more oil to it so I can drive it or is it best to get the leak fixed first. If so, how much oil would be recommended. The fuel in the tank is approximately 1 year old, any concerns with the age of the fuel? These may be basic questions, but I don’t want to cause any damage unnecessarily and I am not much of a mechanic especially on Porsches though I can learn over time. Any help is appreciated. if you would take a picture of the whole bottom of the engine-that would help. The one thing i see is-that your Alu. oil return tubes (do not like them at all) are installed the wrong way..

Thanks for the feedback. When I get a chance I will take better pictures of the engine and post them.

@proporsche Here are a few more photos. After getting a closer look at the leak it appears that screw plug may be the culprit? It is not flush to the case with a few threads showing. Hopefully that is a better look at the tubes also.

it looks like the drain plug is leaking ... time for an oil change, and a new drain plug with a new copper ring ... torqued to the right spec.

Yup most likely drain plug, use 15 mm wrench
And try to make it tight Ivan The oil looks new to me,just make it tight.And of course wipe it with a rag and observe.
