Paint Code Plate - location and look
Trying to replicate 1971 paint code plate.
Ordered a new oem plate Searching the net for samples on what it should look it and where it goes. Original color was Signal Green 7878 I believe for 1971. This is for future paint work preparation. Any pictures would be helpful. |

Are you asking where the tag is located? If so, drivers side A-pillar between the hinges. Just above the door stop mechanism.

Actually how it would have looked like. Trying to replicate
How would have the code 7878 appeared on it. I can probably get some 7 and 9 punches and do it by hand. Looking for original examples and if there would have been anything else on it. Which I had the original or pictures of it Regards |

Use the Advanced search. Terms are "Paint Code Plate" and limit the search to the 911 Technical forum.
There are lots. More info here: Early 911 Colors In 1971, the Conda Green code would have been: 2626-X with X representing the Paint Manufacturer. G would be Gasurit, L would be Lessnal, and H would be Herberts

He's asking about the font and size of the font on the Paint Code tag so he can replicate it. I have no experience with that so I can't help. Someone is bound to have though. All else fails you can approximate size looking at pics. If I was trying to get the font right the only real option might be to have someone machine some punches for you with the "correct" font and size. It's highly, highly unlikely that you can find a punch that matches. At least that has been my experience with non Porsche stuff when trying to duplicate a tag or the font used on a stamping. Sorry I can't be of more help.

You can get it stamped here: https://im356-911.com/collections/911-912-miscellaneous/products/plaque-karosserie-i-d-kunsthartzlack-paint-m548
You will need to get these to attach to car. https://im356-911.com/collections/911-912-miscellaneous/products/copy-of-gas-lid-latch-rubber-buffer-m554 The Early 911S Registry BBS (www.early911sregistry.org/forums/forum.php) has a wealth of knowledge on this topic.

I think I answered my own question, I looked at the Glasurit online paint search and 7878 is there, Dupont called it 217

Let me look at the formulas and then let you know what if any difference there is between 217 and 7878. As for who manufactured it originally? I don't know. Glasurit, Herbert, and others all supplied paint so it would take more research on your part. If you still have the old tag that would tell you who. Do you still have it?

How do you know it's specifically 7878 then? COA doesn't list codes just the name.
Just to confuse things there are multiple Porsche codes for that time period in which the color is called Signalgruen. 078, 6829, 7810, 7878, and 217. All similar and all referred to as Signalgruen. If you are wanting to spray it in a single stage as traditionally most solid Porsches colors are done then 7878 is not going to be viable as it is only available through Glasurit in 90 Line. It is what we refer to as a three stage color. (base, midcoat, clear) 7878 is a different color than what everyone thinks of as signal green. It has a pearl mid coat. Very unusual for the time period. Here is an example of real 7878. https://www.classicmotors.com/detail/1971-911-Targa_308 This would be signal green in a solid (no mid coat) color. https://sellaclassiccar.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1793_p66_f.jpg

.png files do not show on this BBS. Open it on one of your apps and save as a .jpg.

Thanks - Car was painted Red in its history. Mechanically it has been restored with few other upgrades, electric, suspension, fuel system, carbs etc. etc. Planning on the remainder of the restoration
Just put on a Titanium exhaust very happy with it, who needs hearing in old age anyway. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
