2 Keys 1 Car

I have two keys that work in the following situations:

Key 1 (Black) - door
Key 2 (Silver) - door, ignition

They have different cut patterns. Neither work for decklid or glove box.

I've read up on master vs valet keys, but from what I see neither fit the description. I'm wondering why they are different patterns (not the slots but the cut), and how to proceed as far as aligning the keys and locks.

the side grooves are typically determine if you have a master or valet key, but those will still have the same cut.

it is not uncommon to have a door lock or ignition lock replaced over the years and therefore you can end up with multiple keys. Disregarding the slots, it seems odd that you would have two different cuts and have them both work in the door. does this include both the driver's and passenger's door?

for the trunk and glove box you may want to try spaying a little lube into the locks.

when I got my 84 it had 2 keys, one for the doors and glove box and one for the ignition, neither of which worked in the trunk lock. In the end I figured out the trunk lock just had so much contamination the correct key didn't open it. I lubed the lock and it started working with the same key as the doors. finally i disassembled the ignition lock and rekeyed to to match the door locks so now i am back down to one key to acess everything.

While maybe not your case, an easy way to get a key to work, is to pull the cylinder, put the key you want to work in it, and grind off any wafers that stick out.

If it was me, I would take the key that works in the ignition and the tumblers from the other locks to a locksmith and have him rekey them all to work.

Your car came with two keys. A red key for the valet that only worked on the door and the ignition.
The black key operated the glove box, and the trunk lock as well as the obvious door and ignition.

You will need to find out if a lock has been replaced or not. I love to carry just the black key, and I have only used a valet once when we were in San Frisco and the hotel parking garage was valet only. I gave him an extra 10 bucks to park it in a wide spot next to a pillar and he never got going more than a few MPH.

To do it properly you’ll need to pull tumblers from door, ignition et. Get a good key ( not worn) and match the wafers to the key.
Doesn’t make sense that 2 keys will unlock the door with different cuts and one turns ignition tumbler unless someone’s been in there messing around which is not uncommon with old cars.

Thanks all. So ya, oddly the black key that only works on the door also works on the passenger door, but the silver ignition key does not (only on driver door). So weird. Tried some pb blaster in the locks but no go yet. None of this prevents me from operating the car, it's just odd. I appreciate the info.
