1986 911 Wheels
I have a 1986 911 Convertible and would like to install wider wheels and tires. What is the widest wheels I can fit in my car without any modifications to the car?

If you are staying with Fuchs, I run a set of 16” turbo rims 7 & 9” and the rears take 245/45 tires. I use a 1/4” spacer on the rear to fill the wheel well. Downside is cost of the rims and very limited tire selections available. A lot of guys go to a 17” rim to run a smaller sidewall and allows for way more tire choices. Ruff used Speedline rims on the G-body cars which were 9” in rear.

Thank you. I saw some people use 10” on the rears. I wonder if that width may be too much without modifications.

10” would be too wide without rolling the fender. 9” with spacer plenty of tire for the narrow body

Your best bet for a no fuss wheel set w/o mods is 205/55 on 7ET23.3 and 245/45 on 9ET15 x16 In front ride height and suspension spec are going to be the only limit w/o mods in back here will be no issues ever. w/ custom o/s aftermarket wheels you can fit 225/45 x17 on 9ET27 and 245 or 255/40 x17 on 9ET15 or 9.5 ET19 On tracks cars I've seen up to 9 front and 10 rear 245 and 275 tires but this requires a lot of work including mods to the car.

I’m running Fuchs 16x7&8s…tires are VERY limited…I do have a set of 16x6&7s if interested.

Crow911: I vote that your Fuchs 16" wheels are finished like earlier 15" wheels, with the spokes bright, instead of painted black. Did you do that yourself, or have a wheel shop do it? I ask because I have a 1973 car, but it has 16" wheels on it. I kinda like the early wheel look on the longhood cars, but I want to keep the 16" wheels.

did it myself. Tedious taping, primed and painted satin black. I have had to do some touchups here and there to fix chips, but after 5 years they still look great. I did not etch or sand the rim to accept the paint as I thought I might want to return to full polish. But after seeing the results I am staying with the painted version. When my paint job finally fails, I am going to get them professionally powder coated. Here is a before pic.
