Sorry if I miscommunicated. I meant to suggest using a washer in lieu of not using them - bolt or bolt/nut; I didn't suggest using an extra washer where one is already installed - that's redundant. And I noted that the curved "spacer" under the CV bolt head acts like a washer. A washer can be any shape as long as it serves its purpose.

Are you saying that I can use a regular lock washer as long as it fits on the bolt. Or do I have to spend 24.00 on lock washers ?

Regular lock washers (helical, wave spring, toothed star, etc.) do not work well (almost useless) for this application. Use the OEM Schnorr serrated lock washers. Either that or lock wire the screw heads but note that safety wire will not compensate for the joint settling. $24 is cheap compared to the consequences of a loose drive shaft. Also, do not put grease on the CV joint screw threads. Jim

I called Pelican back and spoke to Steve. He said that the waher was needed. The one for my year model is $1.00 x 24 = $24.00 for lock washers. I cant see paying $24 bucks for lock washer's (06 cents at hardware store.).

Tell me I can use regular lock washers as long as the fit. Please!!!

The "Backing plate" is shown in RED
This backing plate does a similar job as a flat washer. (distributes the load from the bolt.)
The split washer in front isn't going to do squat, IMO.

What a few people here have said (myself included) is many 911s came from the factory, an continue to use no additional washer.

If you feel the need to add washers, I would suggest you take Warrens (Early S Man) advice and use the Schnor type.

911's through 1983 (through the SC's) came from the factory with Schnorr lock washers on the CV joint screws. If one has an SC or older car and there are no Schnorr lock washers they have likely been lost during repairs or maintence. In 1984, Schnorr lock washers were no longer used but the CV joint screw part number changed too. There may be something special about this '84 on screw (prevailing torque locking threads?) so I would be careful in extrapolating backwards and concluding that the earlier cars do not need Schnorr lock washers on their CV joint screws.
