Another random update with little progress for this week. I spent some time over the holiday break getting the garage organized and preparing for the chassis build. I needed to add some casters to the fabrication/chassis table so it was easier to move around.
So after a few hours of looking through the garage journal at others ideas and what materials I had here is what I came up with. When Its time to work on the chassis I can use the leveling feet to raise it off the casters and get it leveled up then drop it back on the casters when I am done and roll it out of the way. ![]() I have had large I-beam chassis jigs in the past that are stationary and they work great but they are always in the way, hard to clean around and are usually way too big! I am building extension arms that will bolt to this table along with all of the tubing fixture points that will also bolt to the table. This will allow me to build it modularly in three pieces then set all of the sections up on the table locating everything in place and weld them all together ensuring they are perfectly aligned. That is really the magic of these "certiflat" style tables vs and I-beam jig. I will also keep the fixtures I build and have accurate drawings on the chassis just incase I stuff the car into a ditch and need to do some repair work. ![]() The next task was getting the rest of the rust cut out, I basically just cut the rest of the floor out and the bottom 3"-4". This allows me start fresh with only the shape as a reference for the floor and chassis structure of the car. The chassis will be mainly 1.5" X 0.095 DOM mild steel. I don't want the floor to be raised up the whole 1.5" so I am going to split the difference and have the 0.75" below the factory floor line and rocker line. This will do two things for me, keep the floor reasonably low and mounts the chassis just slightly below my bodywork which hopefully protects the rockers and front lip from bashing off the road as much. ![]() ![]() So now that I have the front clip setup on the table I am in the process of taking all of my measurements and designing the new chassis. This is the part where this build is going to get wild, I don't do anything conventional or expected. You guys are in for a surprise! |
