wiring label printers
I have just spent 2 week worth of spare time chasing down a poorly running engine problem following an engine/trans r&r. Turns out I had connected 2 sensor wire plugs wrongly. So thinking about that, I would like to get a tool to make little wiring ID tags-can anyone give me a recommendation? Thanks in advance

We use Brady at work (and I do at home) for making stickers and cable sleeves .
We are just upgrading to newer models , but the m210 has performed well for years . A bit like my dymo ![]() ![]() ![]() |

At work, we use Brady label printers for this kind of thing. Here are some links to something comparable (and much less expensive):
https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/wiring_solutions/labeling/portable_label_printers/lw-px300vp https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/wiring_solutions/labeling/label_cartridges/224vslpx https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/wiring_solutions/labeling/label_cartridges/205stbypx I've never used the Epson gadget so no idea how reliable it is. There are vinyl wrap-around labels for cables that are already made. I like the shrink-wrap labels for wires/cables that are not terminated yet. Another option is to buy sheet labels that you can run through your laser printer. These are kind of wasteful if you just have to do a few: https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Label-Self-Laminating-Around-Cable-Labels/dp/B078XR72Y7?th=1 And Panduit (and I think Thomas & Bets) still make the vinyl cloth wrap-around label books for old-school cable marking. I use these on spark plug wires: https://www.platt.com/p/0098915/panduit/wire-marker-card-vinyl-cloth-b3/074983948024/pdtpcmb3 |

There was also a recent thread about using a Brother handheld printer…

Those look to be for cables between 6 and 12mm in diameter so OK for plug wires but nothing smaller?

This guy gives the definitive advice on automotive motorsports type harnesses, even if he does race H-D's at Bonneville.
https://www.rbracing-rsr.com/wiring_ecu.html When he recommended the DYMO Rhino label maker years ago, I bought one and couldn't be happier. 3/4" or 1" wide wire shrink tubing if needed, various colors if needed. I'd opt for the clear shrink tubing over the label though. The clear on the all in one labels doesn't seem to last, IME. |

It was the DG and BG marked sensor wires. I replaced both sensors and since they are identical-the replacements are unmarked. So I tried making my own markers from duct tape and a felt tip-not good! Then I used a funky system of white dots with correction fluid, also unsatisfactory. Now I am ready to use some decent labels.
I am wondering if the heat shrink labels would shrink down to a single wire diameter, as in the case of the oil temp and pressure sender wires? |

Shrink tubing for the Rhino series goes down to 1/4" with a 3:1 shrink ratio. Dunno if I have any that small to give you a pic, but this is the 3/8" shrunk down and finished with clear shrink tubing (oil and gas rating).
