Seeking my Father's old 911
Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out to this community in the hope of finding my late father’s Porsche 911. This car holds immense sentimental value for me, and I’d love to know where it ended up or even bring it back into the family if possible. Unfortunately, I don’t have the VIN, which has made the search more challenging. I’ve attempted to look it up through VINWiki, but I haven’t had any luck so far. Additionally, I don’t have details about its previous insurance or complete ownership history. What I do have are a few photos of the car and its old license plates. I believe the car was originally Copper Brown Metallic from the factory but was later resprayed black. My father owned and registered it while living in Colorado and in Illinois as well. To make matters more difficult, the car was sold well before I was even born, so I have no first-hand recollection of it. Tragically, my father, his parents (my grandparents), his brother, and many of his friends have also passed away, leaving me with no one to ask for more details or memories of the car. As a bit of background, my father was passionate about aviation and flew the P-51 Mustang at various airshows across the country. He was known for his love of cars and planes alike, and I’m hoping to honor that legacy by finding this Porsche 911. Here’s what I’ve done so far:
If anyone here has advice on how to track down a specific car's VIN via known plates/registration/previous owner, I would be immensely appreciative. I apologize if this is not the right subforum for this kind of post, but I wanted to share my search with a community that understands the significance of cars like this. Feel free to comment below or message me directly. Thank you in advance for any and all support! |

Sorry for your loss.
I only know this website listing 911 SC owners: https://adelgigs.com/911scregistry.shtml As your fathers car seems to be an earlier 911S this is basically worthless. But you can contact Simon if he know other websites like his listing 911 owners too? I personally would contact workshops in the areas where your father lived as the car required to be maintained. If you're lucky you get some history via the service records? The early 911S registry deals only with the longhood cars up to 1973. https://www.early911sregistry.org/forums/content.php?125-membership&tabid=39 But hey, contacting them is also worth a try as this is also a long existing community... Good luck! Thomas

It's a 1976 US delivery 911S Sunroof Coupe in copper brown metallic. That really narrows it down actually. I would estimate to less than 100 cars. If it was repainted black, then even better in terms of tracking it down. IMHO CBM is an amazing vintage color and a narrowbody middie restored with bright trim is ::chef's kiss:: BTW photos look like they blacked out the trim too. Originally it would have been anodized (bright) aluminum.
There were only a total of 2,079 US 49 State Coupes. Copper Brown Metallic, while not exceedingly rare in those years, I would still say is less than 10% or even 5% of the cars made. If that's true, then there are only 100 of those ever built. If its still like the picture, it has 6X 15" Fuchs upgraded and someone added the front chin spoiler. It's probably still black. Look for engine bay pics showing the original copper brown metallic on the inside (usually they wouldn't bother dropping the engine, with black exterior. If my information is correct, the VIN would be between 9116200001-9116202079. If you were that obsessive, you could individually hunt down all 76 US delivery Copper brown metallic Coupes and check the VINs by asking the current owners and asking if they know the history of the car (ie It was in Colorado at some point) Meanwhile, I'd search for any old insurance paperwork if possible, or even ask your dad's old Insurance agent. If he was like my dad, he used the same agent for 50 years and the agent had kids who worked at the same ins agency. They might remember and be able to find old paperwork with the VIN. You can use google to search this forum for 76 CBM coupes and see if you can find any info as well.

I would contact the Colorado DMV with the plate number and ask for the VIN? Seems like the most likely way to get this info. They should have the records. Only question is whether they'd divulge. I can't see why not.
