Luftgekühlt 10 Universal Studios Backlot
On a whim I submitted my 930 beater as a display car and to my surprise it was selected. This is no show car. It's mostly original but lots of miles (113k) and patina denoting its place in this world as a driver as Porsche intended.
I've never been to a Luft event and actually only recently attended my first car show at the recent PCA Monarch Beach gathering with the pic below taken by Pelican Parts. Looks like about 70 miles from south OC to Universal so that part should be some fun. Cheers. ![]()

Luftgekühlt 10 Universal Studios Backlot
Congrats on getting selected. That’s a beautiful car and no beater by any stretch of the word. Both a friend and I submitted but didn’t get selected. Hope to see you and your car at the show…

Congrats on being selected. Driver quality 930 is badass. You're lucky to be selected to arguably the greatest car show of all time (in my humble opinion) Luft 7 at Universal was unreal. Being a big film enthusiast, it was amazing to be on the backlot (and not just on the Universal Studios tour bus that takes you around it!)
One of the best parts of my day was when I was in the "Mexico" set part looking at the wild cars they had there and I see the tour pull up and they did the whole flash flood part of the tour, but I was standing on the backlot side. It just felt really special. It was so cool to walk around the main town square where many episodes of Twilight Zone, and Back to the Future were filmed. (Of course a million other TV shows, commercials and films too!) I assume you bought the owners party ticket too, come say hi if you see me!

How much do they charge for entering your car?

I like looking at cars but the fun for me is talking to all you guys at the event. I haven't had an air cooled car since 1987 so just getting back into it and I really don't know much at all but eager to learn.

Just saw some of your Youtube and ok I will make sure I fill up on coffee before driving up so I don't have to stand in the long lines haha. I didn't buy the Friday owners party tickets as I was just planning on making the drive up very early Sat am to miss traffic and get there maybe around 7am. And then on the way home, I want to cruise through the art district of downtown LA and over the new 6th st bridge. Haven't made that drive since I left LA over 20 years ago.

It should be a great event. If I remember right from the previous Universal Backlot show, they might want you to load the car in on Friday night. But I might remember it wrong.

With tax it was $300 for one ticket. And that didn't include the extra $75 for the Friday night event.

I have a picture with me and your '72. It was parked at the Laguna Seca lot during the Monterey event a few years ago. That car and your WSIR videos opened my eyes to these air cooled cars. Thanks for the inspiration.

How’s parking work for spectators. Got early bird tickets and want to drive my Porsche down. Is it safe? Anything happening the day/night before on Friday? First time attending so would love to hang out, meet people and shoot the ****.

Congrats! We'll see you there!
I'll admit I chuckled at your 70 mile commute. This will be my fourth pilgrimage to Luft, 1,542 miles taking the most direct route, which we seldom do. This time we're driving three cars. Can't wait! Luft 6, 2019 ![]()

Look forward to meeting you. Good question on parking. There is obviously tons around Universal but do the spectator tickets get you some kind of preferred parking with other spectators close to the event? Maybe some of the guys who have been can chime in or maybe a good idea to shoot the Luft team an email.

So yeah I was initially hoping to make it a one-day thing...drive up early Sat and drive home in the afternoon after the event ends. I realize that's not much of an adventure. If Jack Olsen is correct and the display cars need to be parked/organized Friday, then I'll drive up early Friday and maybe hit Angeles Crest first. A far cry from 1,500+ miles but so far 40 miles is the most I've done in one day with the 930....so doing maybe 120 miles with 50 of them through some beautiful mountain passes sounds like a great start for me!

Oh man, it's gonna be a blast! My wife and I went solo to 4-6, and then with car and growing kiddo road-tripped from Dallas to 7, 8, and the most recent Air Water. Went to 9/AW sans car because of work schedule. Pat and crew do such an awesome job with the curation and visuals, and meeting new people really seals it. 6 was really something to behold, pretty overwhelming (in a good way!) so stoked to go back! We've built those big road trips around Luft, so it's been such a catalyst for experiences for us and I'm really grateful to their whole team.
This go-around my wife will be 8 months pregnant, so it'll be just me and the now 5 year old making the journey alone! Gonna make about a 10-12 day trip out of it; the prior scenic routes from Texas to California and back have netted around 4k miles each time. A couple little issues along the way have only added to the experience; dead starter replaced by Hi-Tec in Marin after parking on hills from Albuquerque to SF and calling dozens of shops, accidentally ending up on a 4x4 fire road in Angeles Forest trying to find a short cut to ACH and acquiring some new dents/dings, kiddo napping in the back seat for hours across the country, and on and on. No AC just adds to the fun, or at least the delirium. Miles are memories. We'll be there Friday night for the party; I'll be the guy wrangling the excitable blond spark plug; can't wait! See y'all there! -Kyle 7 in Indy ![]() 8 in San Pedro ![]() AW in Costa Mesa ![]() Proof of my idiocy! ![]() |
