67 Porsche 911 no engine what to do?
Hi
I have a 1967 Porsche 911 and it’s missing the engine. It has the transmission my question to the group is do I look for another engine to put in the car like a 3 L from an SC or try to find a 2 L from the 67 year or just turn around and sell the car because it’s too much of a project. I got the car from a personal friend who has owned it since 1969. The body is fairly good on the car. There is some structural small rust up in the front area. The car is Irish green black leather interior, but I don’t know what it’s gonna cost to buy another engine put it in the car and move forward or whether I should just sell the car as is thank you. |

If you are not a car extreme-enthusiast, sell it move on.
A SC engine, or Carrera would be good but the chassis, brakes, suspension all need updating in order to make it into a good handling, enjoyable, driveable car. I did a project like that for someone and in the end, I think it was ~$75K plus the car and a lot of issues in the middle.

Suggestion: Hold on to the car a big and don't get rid of it immediately. Talk to some local shops - sometimes they have an engine that somebody "left" or sometimes they have a line on somebody looking for a project. You won't have issues selling the body if you go that route, but patience can maximize your return.

I've got a 67 with a 2.2 in it. Owned a long time and it's fun to drive. Depending on how much work you can do yourself at best you will break even. It all depends on what you want to do with it and how long to own. If it's a true S I'd lean towards keeping it. A non matching # well sorted car was listed for a buck and a quarter I believe. Maybe a buck and a half but don't know what it sold for.

Suitable engines in rebuild-able condition are available over on the 911 Parts Wanted/For Sale section of this forum and elsewhere. Depending on the condition of the chassis you can probably get the car repaired and back on the road at a price that won't put you upside down value-wise. As suggested above, contact some local Porsche shops to get some idea of what it will cost to put the chassis right. Add $30K-$50k to have a suitable engine sourced, rebuilt and installed and see if that total is something you are comfortable with. Remember, air cooled 911's are likely only going to gain value over time so you won't lose anything taking your time to do some research and decide what you want to do.

Good luck finding a 67 2.0 motor. I'd settle for 3.0-3.2 with CIS. Easier to find parts, more torque, etc. Then, some one will chime in, will it mate to a 901 or do you need a 915 for the torque? OP didn't say what was paid for the roller. If I was younger I might want it...

67 no engine
First-is it a 911s or 911? There is a fairly strong interest in the 67s cars from high end collectors. Look on the early s registry website
Then, depending on your location, I would pay for a pro appraisal and develop a complete as possible list of the car's needs-then a budget with "I do" and "someone else does" lists. After that you can decide if you want to go ahead or bail out. I am in the early stages of exactly the same project-its going well, and I am fortunate to have a good paint and body guy and a good upholstery guy. But I spend a lot of time online chasing parts, and I havent even started on the engine room stuff yet. Finally-if you do decide to go ahead with a project-do not let the painter put paint on the wires!!! |

My 67 912 handled better to me compared to one of my fellow PCA members 67 911. Those SWB 911's are real tail waggers. That's why they went to Magnesium trans and engine cases in late 68 and lengthened the wheel base to the rear in 69. I think a baddass Type 1 VW engine. that will bolt up to your 901 gearbox, in there would work in interim 'til you could source an SWB Aluminum case. With the SWB Aluminum case you can build a 2.0,2.2,2.4 without modding the case.

Thanks all
I like the idea of just holding onto it going to some local shops finding out if there’s any motors laying around and just do an overall search as to whether it would be worth doing. |

Keep it, don't paint it. I've got 4 rebuilt 67 calipers and new rotors here, MC, etc. not free but I'll let them go for less than I have in them for that car. You're still looking at +/- 50K with a motor and everything else. Steelies make me think not an S though.

Agree with nickelplated5s. If you keep it, don't repaint it. Make it a "preservation class," not a full restoration. Not only will it retain value better, it's cool to drive a car that has real patina and wears its age well.
Where are you located? And put your location in your profile. Then we can recommend local shops. Join the PCA and get connected with your local chapter to get recommended shops and find out who has stuff for your car locally.

Awesome color!
Find a decent running used engine, drop it in and drive that thing while you sort out your long term plans for it. Good luck!

Uhmm, the brakes need to be gone through. Suspension bushings and shocks. Tranny fluid at a minimum. Half shafts and of course a new clutch. Forgot about new tires. Wiring harness could be a problem. Interior could wait. As said, +/- 50K.
