O-Ring for Front Wheel Spindle

Hi,

this is my first post, I have an 87 911 carerra, I installed front wheel bearings and can't figure out how to install the O-Ring for Front Wheel Spindle. When I removed drivers side it did not have the part and the other side it fell out before I could see where it went. All on-line video's and instructions don't mention this part. It is a small black rubber ring about the size of a Quarter. Maybe I don't need it?

Thanks for any help

Squid

Squid,
First, welcome to the Forum
You will find a lot of help here.

Here is an image of an earlier spindle but basically the same as yours.

The O-ring goes behind (green arrows) the seal race and over the spindle.

The seal race is removed with a standard (Harbor Freight) inexpensive 2-jaw puller.

The spindle and new O-ring should be covered with grease under and behind the seal race.

When reinstalling the seal race, heat it to about 150F and it will slide on a cold spindle.

Be sure to seat the seal race with a pipe-tool and hammer.
Never use the bearing tightening to seat the seal race.

If you have more questions, be sure and ask.
The only ‘dumb question’ is the one un-asked.
Again,
WELCOME!

Best,
Grady

Thanks for the help but I don't think we're talking about the same o-ring, the diagram shows this o-ring on the spindle. How could it fall out in tact when I never removed the spindle

[QUOTE=Fastdog911;before I tackle , any tricks, info, I can use to get the o-ring/race back on?[/QUOTE]

1- Clean to shiny metal all parts

2- The spindle and new O-ring should be covered with grease under and behind the seal race. (install)

3- When reinstalling the seal race, heat it to about 150F and it will slide on a cold spindle. (place the steel seal race in a metal pan and fill with motor oil to cover the race. Place in oven @ 150 for one hour to heat.)

4- Slide hot oiled race over spindle, the race will all but fall on/over the spindle.

5- Be sure to seat the seal race with a pipe-tool and hammer. (I have used a short piece of pvc plumbing pipe to use as a "pipe-tool" to tap the race firmly to the spindle seat, it won't take much.)

6- Clean up wife's kitchen pan before she finds out

Never use the bearing tightening to seat the seal race.

Appreciate this post

Just asking, how important is it to pull the seal race and replace? By that I mean, does it only need to be pulled and serviced/replaced if there is a groove that would impair the seal from functioning? ie, seeing dirt or rust getting to the bearing ?
I've never pulled this race when servicing my brakes or bearings, its always looked very good to my eyes. Thanks
