headlights don’t work.. 1981 carrera

My headlights work come on. All
other lights work when the switch is pulled on. rear and front parking lights and blinkers work but not the headlights! thinking something is not plugged in. where is the connection? what could it be? hidden really? all fuses and relays work at the fuse box.

So if you turn on the headlight switch, you have power to the fuses that feed the headlights but not the headlights themselves?

No, no power to fuses

This is the deal today:

With the key on-
All lights work, NOT headlights BUT did get HIGHBEAMS to come on using the steering column turn signal / high beam switch.

I decided to put in new steering column turn signal / high beam switch thinking It would get the Headlights to work. NOPE!
with a new switch, the same is happening, all lights work, except NOW high beams dont work either.

What now? Anyone have a picture of the dash, shown the headlight switch wire location ?

I am sure I could have put a wire on the wrong in the wrong connector on the pull switch on dash. Which I will check.

Could it be the dash headlight switch?

I did notice that the OLD switch has a yellow side wire that was connected to itself...the new switch wire had a yellow wire coming from its side loose and the other end was was taped against the side of the cable as if its not to be used...Why? Doesnt it need to be connected somewhere?

You may see an issue in one of my pics

Do you have a wiring diagram? Looking at page 298 of the Haynes manual the headlights are powered by terminal 56 on the light switch. There is a both a white/black and yellow wire coming from that terminal. These look to be connected together on one of your photos but should be both attached to terminal 56.

2 wires one terminal 56?

this is a prior post I found...whcih is differnt at terminal 56:

That is the only time power is supplied to terminal 56. This explains why when you turn the car off at night the parking lights remain on but the headlights turn off.
Terminal 30 should have 2 wires attached to it a red wire and a Red/white wire. The red/white wire goes to the headlight flasher switch so you can flash your lights at boxsters, but they won't flash back.
There are two green/blk wires on terminal 58L and two green/red wires on Terminal 58R
Only one White/blk wire on terminal 56
A red/white wire on terminal 75
Green wire and a blk/blue wire on N
White green on 57
3 black/blue wires on 58a

END

I should have both yellow and BlK/ With and yellow on one(56)?

The 2, red/ red white should not be on one terminal (30)?

Is there a signle white wire which photo shows on #56? thanks for your help....

this photo has only one wire.

It seems there are two ways of wiring the dipped beam. The white/black should definitely be on 56. As I said the yellow wire on my car was ( until recently ) also connected to 56 but I have now connected the yellow wire to the yellow wire that emerges from the dipper switch. The ignition needs to be on for the headlights to work (power comes in on 75. Are you getting power on 56 with ignition on?

Do you have a test lamp? You need to check if, with the ignition on and headlamp switch pulled out, you are getting power at #56. Connect one end of the test lamp to #56 and the other to earth (any metal under the dash).
If the test lamp doesn't light then check that you are getting power on #75; this is powered by the ignition switch. Check power at #75 by pulling off the red/white, connecting your test lamp to the red/white wire and the other end to earth. If the test lamp doesn't light then there is no power from the ignition switch.
Report back when you have done these tests.
