New GT3 RS - Retro style
Not sure if I really like this? What do you think?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/996-02GT3RSa.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/996-02GT3RSb.jpg |
Only available in white with a choice between red or blue "styling". Carbon fibre front lid and rear spoiler. Six point harness, fire extinguisher and a roll cage should be standard.
It's nice in white, but I think I could live without the "styling". Still I'm curious how the styling would look in black? Someone here with good photoshop skills ? :D |
Without the side script it would be v.cool. I even like the red wheels.
|
Porsche AG must LOVE that in the press photos used by Autoweek (both online and in print) the red turned out hot pink!

I love it . I'm replacing the red GT3 on my desktop with it. I think it is worthy of the RS. Maybe I can afford one in 15 or 20 years, but I doubt it.
|
I wonder how it is coming to the US? I read somewhere that DOT will not allow a roll cage from the factory??? (I guess it might interfere with the air bags :-))
Maybe its coming as a race car only, like the lotus. |
I like it.

I like it...way better than the regular 996 turdy look, IMHO!

"Current production is slated for the final 3 months of 2003, with 300 units being made and an undisclosed amount earmarked for the States." "Porsche plans to finish all cars in white, with decals and wheels in red or blue. Prices will fall somewhere north of the GTs's $99,900 tag." It will be less than 3000 lbs, a lightweight by modern car standards. I like it a lot, even with the stripes. If I had one, though, I'd store the rear wing in the attic and replace it with something reminscent of the ducktail. The rear wing is probably a novelty in most parts of the country, but not where I live. The UCI (Univ. of Cal., Irvine) parking lot that I drive by every day has wings like that by the bucketload. |
Ya know I was thinking the same thing about the wing. I was at the dealer the other day and noticed that these wings are being fitted to alot of 996s and they look FG. I would like to take a FG copy and cut the big "T" off and fill it. Then it would be almost like a little duck tail!! I dont think the down force imbalance would hurt me because I cant imagine I would see north of 80 MPH very often :-))
|
Ha, they have tried to make it look like the '89 Club sport.

EDIT: I checked AutoWeek.com and I quote: "Current production is slated for the final three months of 2003, with 300 units being made, but the vehicle will not be available for the States . Porsche plans to finish all cars in white, with decals and wheels in either red or blue. Prices will fall somewhere north of the GT3’s $99,900 tag. " BTW: I love duck tails, but this car is a modern one meant to kick butt, just like the old ones did in their day, it needs proper aerodynamics to do it on a race track, and that tail is very functional. |
I'm just learning Photoshop (slowly), but here's a quick Black GT3RS for you:

Man, that looks terrible... how embarrassing. :(
|
|
Good looking car, styling and all, but with white, i think the blue would look better. Now to have guards red with black graphics would be hella nice.

(I checked the article again, and I typed it correctly). Sounds like there will be a "correction" piece in next week's mag. |
Don't like it one bit. The wheels look too rice!
Give me one for free and I might reconsider. |
Thanks for the modified picture. Only I was thinking how it might look - still in white - with black script. :)
BTW how on earth can this car not be legal in the USA? I just don't get it? If it lives up to the pollution rules and crash standards then why not? It's perfectly streetable. Because of a roll cage? Come on that only makes it safer. |
Mikkel, in America just because it is safer doesn't mean we get it.
 Some people work under the impression that they know what is "good" for us whether we like it or not. |

Does it come with chopsticks?
|
Soy, that's pretty funny, Dan.

OH! White car with black stripes... that's way easier:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...-02GT3RSa2.jpg Sort of reminds me of my buddies 74 Carrera: http://gallery.rennlist.com/albums/albuo14/DSCF0044.jpg :D |
Thanks. Exactly what I had in mind. Looks kind of race car like. Better than red in my opinion. Black wheels on a white car has a certain "effect" :)
|
I agree. There's no nicer look than the classic black centered Fuchs on a white car.
|
Like the front valence on the turbo (and Cayenne even) a lot better.
|
Nostatic
Do you prefer the Turbo front on 996s? The big black nostrils??? Wow I'm the opposite. No black grill for me please :) A GT2, or GT3 for that matter, has a much nicer front end than a Turbo in my opinion. I have gotten used to the Cayenne by now, but I still don't like how the whole front end is one big air intake. |
Quote:
BTW, I like the GT3 and GT2 front ends better as well. I think the turbo front it is okay, and it has a great muscular look to it. However, to me, it also makes the car look fat, this may be because it actually does this, or simply because I think of the turbo as fat compared to the GT2/GT3 and have grown to associate that weakness with the look of the car. |
Yeah and Jeeps run around w/o the doors as well! Come on a 5pt harness keeps you inside the car while you could fly out in a jeep w/o doors.

I suppose there are those that feel that way about *all* turbo years, but I think the straight 996 coupe looks like a jelly bean, whereas the 996 turbo looks more like a 911. The GT3 is somewhere inbetween to my eyes...I'd have to see it in person though. |
|
GT3 has the nicest front end by far. Actually it has the best body work too, i like the rockers.
|
I feel exactly the opposite. I think the rockers and front end have too many angles/edges, and looks like they've been cribbing from the new BMWs.
But, that's why they make different cars for different people. |
I like the GT3 the best also (but, then again, I've got a lot of BMW in my blood - and one in my garage).

... and considering the fact that it will weigh almost 1400KG I'm not sure if it deserves the legendary "RS" name. Maybe Clubsport would have been more appropriate ? |
I can't possibly imagine the GT3 RS in a 4WD version. They aim for a weight of 1225Kg or so (can't remember). That's what a Carrera 3,2 weighs remember!
|
OK, I have my copy of Auto Express in front of me here. Here's the Official press release :
The GT3-RS will weigh 1360KG with a full tank of fuel (50kg less than the standard GT3) Performance will be around 190mph top speed. 0-62mph in 4.4 and 0-124mph in 14 seconds. It has a 3.6 litre flat six putting out 381bhp (61bhp more than standard Carrera) and revs to a dizzy 8,200rpm. A new intake has been added under the rear wing to increase air flow to the engine at high speeds. It seems I was wrong about it having four wheel drive. It will have a close ratio six speed gearbox feeding power to the rear wheels through a light-weight flywheel. Although fully road legal (in the UK) the car will be produced in accordance with international GT rules for motorsport and will therefore come with a full roll cage. The main competition will be the Ferrari Challenge Stradale, though at around £85,000 (in the UK) the GT3-RS will undercut the Stradale (£133,000) by a long way. Although down on power by 81bhp, the GT3-RS is set to smash the GT2 lap time around the Nurburgring, due to improved handling and light weight. Time for a bit of Ferrari bashing don't you agree .... :D |
Quote:
Unfortunately Ferrari has the 360 Challenge Stradale: Weight: 1180Kg. 425HP Carbon fibre brakes, 19 inch wheels, racing prepared suspension. |
