Confused About G50 Gearbox Starter Mounting Studs

I am thinking of buying a different G50 gearbox for my '87 Carrera.

I have not removed the gearbox or starter before from my car.

I'm confused because I've seen pics of G50 gearboxes that have 2 studs on the gearbox for the starter barrel nuts taken from a thread here on the forum:

But I've also seen other pics of G50 gearboxes where only the lower stud is in the gearbox. The other side is just a hole that is not threaded, like this pic (also from this forum):

What's the deal? I don't know what I have but for the one with only 1 stud how is the other side of the starter held to the gearbox housing?

The one I'm looking at buying is a G50/01 and it only has the one stud. In my '87, per the PET, there is only 1 stud:

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Isn't the upper stud for mounting the gearbox to the engine. The stud is very long and threaded into the block.

^ Yes. When the trans is mated to the engine you will see the stud. When the trans is removed, you will not see the stud.

Thanks guys!
