Steve Wong Chip Advice

All,

I have been driving the new 87 carrera for five months now. I want to keep the car as stock as possible but read some of the posts about the Steve Wong chip. So a couple of questions:

On average, how much horsepower does it add?

Easy to reverse back to stock once installed?

Any long term damage to the engine?

Downside?

I just added a Steve Wong chip, noticeable difference. More bottom end and added power. I should have done it sooner.

Very easy install, reversible no downside.

Up side:
Pulls harder right up to the rev limiter.
Idles smooth as glass.
Same or better mileage.
Estimating a 15hp gain. Seat of the pants dyno.

Downside:
There is none (IMHO)

Definately improved the drivebility of mine,
Idles very consistent now too, havent realy given mine the full beans since fitting but it does seem to want to go now, with seemingly more torque etc at low RPM which is a real bonus, not sure how much it has increased the BHP, the main thing for me is that it seems to have made the car less of an effort to drive at low to mid RPM.

Forget the HP gains...not enough to discuss but the improved driveability is fantastic.
More low and mid range power for around town use is worth every cent.

Couple with a premuffler in place of the cat - (oh - see you are in Kalifornia) you'd need to change back for emissions...

But - YES - nice difference in all aspects. I even got better gas mileage with my old 1987

I have owned 7 84-89 911's and installed 5 of his chips. They work great as advertised with no issues.

I bought another 88 911 Monday this week and will be ordering a Steve Wong chip.

I wish he gave repeat customer discounts!

Bought the car in June 09 and the SW chip was going to be my X-mas gift from my wife.

X-mas came early as in September, Hee Haw... best result for the money

I received my chip today. I'm going to put it in tomorrow and will let you know. I also bought the cat bypass. I'm excited to see and feel the difference. My car is a 1984 3.2 stock.

No downsides!

Best bang for your buck, is definitely get the SW Chip for the cat bypass/pre-muffler. With that chip you will realize great benefits. That in combination of a perfectly tuned motor, including fresh or overhauled fuel injectors (A MUST!) I was getting 30 mpg hwy at 75 mph! The other benefit not listed, is hard to put words to... The chip improves the driveability at lower rpms... Smoother and easier to drive. Steve is local in SoCal, and almost always answers the phone when you call with technical questions. DO IT!

Got the chip installed in my 1984 P-car. Upgraded to 4k on the motherboard. I can tell my idle is just over 1000rpm. I will lower it tomorrow. Took the car out and got it up to temps and it ran really nice. It does feel smoother and the power is noticeable. I will put the cat bypass tomorrow as well. The instructions were good that came with the chip and SW even gives you a small wire to put on the motherboard to upgrade from 2k to 4k. I will look at the throttle body later. It is interesting that SW states in the instructions that a third of all P-cars need to have the throttle body attended to. I have more testing to do on this but so far I am happy with the preliminary results.

Yes, there are!

It's unfortunate that many waste their money on so-called 'performance' chips. When for the
same cost, the DME ECM can be ungraded to the lastest 911 3.2 DME ECM chip (8K - 28 pin)
used in the last 911 3.2 ('89) which provides the best responsiveness and overall best running
of all the previous chips (2K & 4K) whether modified or not. And then not having to worry
about failing an emissions test and converting back to a stock chip is a real plus, right?
There's no need to switch to a higher octane either, which is often required with 'performance'
chips.

Porsche went to the 8K EPROM to include much better operating parameters and better driveability
than was in the early 2K/4K EPROMs ('84-'87). Why have your engine still running that old and
antiquated DME ECM version software with a limited 2K/4K EPROM? Besides the EPROM upgrade,
the DME ECM could be easily modified at the same time to prevent future typical intermittent
running problems at no additional cost. It really doesn't make any logical sense does it, to not do
a complete chip upgrade and ECM reliability modification, does it? It's like upgrading Windows
XP to Service Pack 3 versus just installing Windows 7 and getting all the benefits of the latest
developments.

Additionally, many future POC/PCA events in the near future will monitor and challenge event
participants who may be running in stock classes with 'performance' chips. Why risk a
dis-qualification from an event because of a so-called 'performance' chip, when the basic same
performance can be achieved using the latest DME ECM 8K stock chip?

Bottom line: Do the complete 911 3.2 DME ECM update and not a second rate one
by still running with early 1st generation Porsche 3.2 software.

I put one of Steve's chip in my stock 84 3.2 with a Murch premuffler and have never looked back. Low end power and pull all through the power band. Improved idle and an increase in MPG!!! Best bang for the buck, go for it.

Get the one Steve makes that matches your car, i.e., if you have a cat or a bypass, what grade of fuel you have in your area.

Wong chip in an 84 RoW 911

Great info on this thread!

Hey Hugh, I have an 84 RoW Coupe too. Did you see noticeable gains like the other folks above who have the US version?

I'm putting a cat bypass on mine soon and we can get 93 octane up here in Mass. It sounds like the consensus is that the returns are good, so I'll get the Wong chip after I sort out some more pressing projects on my car.
