Nadella drive flange question??
Hi guys,
I have an early 901 with the drivers side being a lobro and the pax side original nadella.. I was tinkering with the idea of updating the nadella to the lobro but would have to change the drive flange on the diff.. any thoughts, sources for getting the needed parts.. I know I would buy the new axles at PP but what about the flange.. thanks, david |

David,
You not only need a transmission axle flange but a stub axle also. Remember to get 12 M8 CV bolts & Schnorr washers and six washer plates. These axle flanges use an aluminum plug to keep the differential lube out of the CV joint. You will need one of them and an O-ring & circlip. Since there isn’t any gasket on these early CVs, I use an aerosol sealant. I carefully mask everything but the outermost of the mating surface. With everything ready to bolt in place, I quickly apply the sealant, rip off the masking and attach the CV with the sealant still tacky. You have to start the bolts first because you can’t rotate the parts relative to each other once the CV contacts the sealant. It takes a soft blow bfh to get the CV loose. " ![]() (C) Dr. Ing. h.c. David,
Here is an axle flange and the associated hardware. ![]() Note the bolt does not have a centering step under the head of the bolt as some later bolts do. It is very important for that step not to be there. The oiling groves on the flat washer go inward toward the flange. This set of pieces only work on the NON-simplified differential from ’65 into ’68 and change with the introduction of the simplified differential. Best, Grady |

For everyone to know what we are talking about: Top is
the ’65-’66 Nadella axle. Center is the ’66-68 short Lobro. Bottom is the 923 axle circa ’81 911SC. ![]() Thanks to Greg and Orrin at Eurosport Ltd. Best, Grady |

Hi Grady,
Thanks for the pics.. I sourced some used pieces from local shop in GA. He said he has done several of the "swaps" from nadella to lobro. Would you lean towards getting two new lobro's or using the one I have now (works fine) and getting another used lobro shaft for the pax side? Here is a shot of the interior that I started on today.. I had to pull it to gain access to a rust area in the wheel well and wanted to get the package shelf treated as well.. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

David,
I suppose weather to buy two new Lobro axle assemblies or one good used depends on the cost, what your use is, your budget and a number of other factors. The short Lobro isn’t as ling lived as the later 108 mm CVs on the long axle. The reasons are they run at a greater angle depending on suspension deflection from normal and the CVs aren’t nearly as robust. Even if you now buy just one used axle, I would stash away a pair of new ones (I have). Sooner or later they will be NLA. Now, what to do with your Nadella axle and parts? I’ll bet you can sell it to someone with an early 911 being restored to absolutely original. Or, you might buy another to stash in case your 911 is to be shown. For normal use I would not use a Nadella – they are old and fragile. Unfortunately you can’t convert to the long axle with the big CVs without also converting from SWB to LWB. Best, Grady

Hi Grady,
Thanks.. Yes I agree.. for one I love acquiring and holding onto original parts, literature etc.. for my 911.. You have mentioned before but everyday is one day closer to the day alot of parts will not be around for these early cars. I was leaning towards getting a used axle then next winter installing new ones and rebuilding the old ones to have as spares. thats way down the list however. haha.. need to refurb the suspension etc.. first. thanks again.. david |

Does anyone have an image of the Nadella LSD transmission axle flange? This is the one that has internal splines to fit the 904 ZF LSD.
What is part 911.332.943.00 “Intermediate flange for cars with limited slip differential only in exchange – Nadella – - Lobro – “? Best, Grady
