mirrors don’t adjust horizontally

(88 carrera coupe)

My mirrors seem to have both suddenly stopped moving horizontally when I use the adjustment ‘joystick’. (up and down are ok)
Since the joystick is the thing they both share, my assumption is the switch or the wiring to the switch is unhappy.

Is this a common thing & can the switch be cleaned up or does it need to be replaced?

Take a look at this video series (3 x 10 min episodes) of a DIY diagnosis and repair for the left/right mirror adjust.

In his case, it was for an '81 SC, and turned out to be wiring issue. He fixed that and also showed how to do a mirror overhaul to make movements faster/smoother.

Youtube channel: @Dr.Garage911 --- Episodes 140 / 141 / 142

https://youtu.be/IsIgaG46DB0

NOTE: video has no voice/dialogue ; displays clear captions in English/Japanese --- very entertaining --- you could browse through the 239 episodes on his channel --- closest thing there is to video version of "101 Projects".

Hope it helps you. Enjoy and good luck!

Joe, it could also be the change-over switch. This switch is a DPDT. One half of it (one pole) is used for horizontal and the other half is used for vertical. The pole for horizontal could be bad. Or it could be the feed line to it that is the issue. Or the joystick itself. It is worth inspecting and cleaning.

You may want to use the factory diagram for MY 88 or, if you go the Bentley route, be aware that the mirror pages are inverted. So you need to follow the diagram on page 970-91 that is wrongly titled "Mirrors 1984-1985". You have later mirrors with 2 motors per mirror. You may also find inconsistencies in wire colors. Good luck.

thank you both! I removed the switch to see if the make/break pattern followed the schematic. It seems like there perhaps is a short in the switch(?) I only had battery on pin 2 at the driver’s side door which seems off (?) but I haven’t traced the thing out to see what it should be doing.
Yes Gilles, you’re correct that these are the 2-motor mirrors. One of the first things I had to fix on the car was the driver’s side mirror (which was falling off, and also didn’t move).
I will check out the L/R switch as well. Both sides will not move “out” from the car, only in. I can move either one up and down, or towards the car so I am getting power to the X-axis motor but only in one direction. It is the same issue for both mirrors.

You mean yesterday you couldn't move horizontally in both directions and now that you have checked and clean things you are getting one horizontal direction but still not the other?
Or was it already like that initially?

Neither mirror would move “away” from the car horizontally. They would only move “towards” the car. I hope that makes sense; if you were to sit in the driver’s seat in a LHD model, the mirror would not move to the Left. The opposite would be true from the passenger’s seat/mirror.

I just got the replacement switch in the mail and installed it and we’re all good now.
Thanks!
