Wevo classic shifter - 1st and 2nd gear "ticking"

Hey everyone,

I've had my Wevo classic shifter installed for probably 7-8 years now. The car has been off the road for a year and a half during a restomod project, and I'm just back to driving it (and making some small adjustments.)

While I had the car apart, i upgraded to the Ultimate Shift Rod Bushing. I had some issues with the shift rod binding up, now solved, and due to some other changes I made I needed to re-adjust my shift coupler. Coupler is Wevo PSJ, gearbox fully rebuilt a few years back. Shift coupler adjusted "by the book" and the car shifts well, no issues reaching any gears so all good there.

However, getting to my question: at low speeds in 1st and second gear, I get a slight ticking noise from the gearbox that can be felt through the shift lever. Note that the Wevo shifter keeps the shift lever under spring tension. See the photo below, this is the shifter position in 1st gear. If I push the shift lever just a few mm to the left, against the spring tension, the ticking goes away.

I have attempted to adjust this out at the coupler, but even with changes 1) the ticking is still there, and 2) the shifting suffers. So I reset everything where it should be, but it seems like the centering springs in the Wevo are pulling the shift lever too far to the right.

Any thoughts?

Here is the shifter in 1st gear. The lever can be pulled all the way left against the springs, just a few mm to the left and the ticking stops.

The slope is not slippery; in fact it is entirely frictionless.

I was an early adopter on the WEVO 915 shifter... my application has been racing.

I also use the WEVO PSJ.

I installed these things about 20 years ago.

What you have described sounds like an adjustment issue, and not a shifter or coupler design issue.

Perhaps more fine tuning at the coupler will help.

The WEVO instructions for the shifter and coupler are excellent.

Smart Racing Products (SRP) also distributed instructions for the WEVO shifter and coupler (which of course would work with any 915 coupler).

Hayden was the person at WEVO that designed the shifter and PSJ. RIP. He was meticulous and did a lot of prototyping and testing for every WEVO product that was commercialized, and some that were not.

He had a lot of pro racing experience and was the Chief Steward of the Porsche Racing Club for a few years.

The SRP instructions for the WEVO shifter and coupler were written by another expert. He too was a Chief Steward for us and a racer as well.

He too is no longer with us.

RIP.

I do not have any experience with the shift rod bushing you referenced. I have always used a stock bushing for that location as it has always proven sufficient for the application.

Of course it is remotely possible that since this is the item you changed, it might be contributing to what you have described. Easy to troubleshoot... just put in a stock one without any other changes...
