Really stupid question. What's a dizzy?

I've been on this board for about three years and the term "dizzy" always comes up. I have assumed it is just a term for the distributer. Am I correct or does it refer to a "special" distributer, a part thereof, something else?

Elombard 07-07-2003 10:43 AM

You are correct

pbs911 07-07-2003 10:49 AM

Cool. Now I can amaze my friends and enlighten the unknowing.

There are no stupid questions. Only stupid nicknames for parts. ;)

Superman 07-07-2003 12:15 PM

I'd have to agree with Jack. I don't mind saying "tranny" when I mean transmission, but for some reason I can't say "dizzy" when I mean distributor. I guess it's just a personal problem.

I agree, First time I heard dizzy was on here. When I say it, just shoot me.

Mike Feinstein 07-07-2003 01:25 PM

I remember saying that about owning a cell phone...

dotorg 07-07-2003 01:31 PM

I never heard it called a dizzy before PP, either.

CarreraS2 07-07-2003 01:33 PM

I never use that term, either.

But then again, I don't say "rims" when I am talking about wheels, or "motor" when I am talking about an engine! ;)

rattlsnak 07-08-2003 09:05 AM

>>But then again, I don't say "rims" when I am talking about wheels, or "motor" when I am talking about an engine! <<

or 'Tri-Spacial-Dimensional-Linear-Harmonic-Occilator' when referring to a Slinky !

Joe Bob 07-08-2003 09:09 AM

Dizzy is easier to speel than Distributerer.....

724doorE 07-08-2003 09:10 AM

Yea, I can't handle the motor/engine thing either... oh well!

IROC 07-08-2003 10:57 AM

I'm so anal I used to get hung up about calling anti-roll bars "sway" bars, but I have since caved and call them sway bars all the time.

I don't like "dizzy", though. Kinda like calling cams "bumpsticks". I cringe.

Calling it a "Porsch" with no eh on the end drives me nuts...

Decolliber 07-08-2003 01:13 PM

When I used the term anti-roll bar in talking to Audi dealer mechanic, he did not know what I was talking about.
Superman, as a lay pastor, you might want to be careful about the context in which you use the word "tranny."
In Commonwealth countries "motor" colloquially refers to the entire vehicle, as in "nice motor you have there ..."

Zeke 07-08-2003 02:47 PM

Yeh, dizzys, bumpsticks and motors are all sort of low brow speak. It's us old hot rodders that have been doing this car stuff for over 35 years that talk that way. I guess we don't bring much class to the table, just rough-cut experience. I wonder what slang words are commonly used in Germany to describe various parts? I submit that if it was a fatherland term being used, it wouldn't annoy some of you.

They call an engine "der Motor"

Tim

Joe Bob 07-08-2003 03:31 PM

Spanish is "El Motor".....
