Really stupid question. What's a dizzy?

I've been on this board for about three years and the term "dizzy" always comes up. I have assumed it is just a term for the distributer. Am I correct or does it refer to a "special" distributer, a part thereof, something else?

There are no stupid questions. Only stupid nicknames for parts.

I'd have to agree with Jack. I don't mind saying "tranny" when I mean transmission, but for some reason I can't say "dizzy" when I mean distributor. I guess it's just a personal problem.

I never use that term, either.

But then again, I don't say "rims" when I am talking about wheels, or "motor" when I am talking about an engine!

I'm so anal I used to get hung up about calling anti-roll bars "sway" bars, but I have since caved and call them sway bars all the time.

I don't like "dizzy", though. Kinda like calling cams "bumpsticks". I cringe.

When I used the term anti-roll bar in talking to Audi dealer mechanic, he did not know what I was talking about.
Superman, as a lay pastor, you might want to be careful about the context in which you use the word "tranny."
In Commonwealth countries "motor" colloquially refers to the entire vehicle, as in "nice motor you have there ..."

Yeh, dizzys, bumpsticks and motors are all sort of low brow speak. It's us old hot rodders that have been doing this car stuff for over 35 years that talk that way. I guess we don't bring much class to the table, just rough-cut experience. I wonder what slang words are commonly used in Germany to describe various parts? I submit that if it was a fatherland term being used, it wouldn't annoy some of you.
