Recaro Information & Restoration
Hi guys,
I have noticed that every time i sign in here there seems to be a handful of questions trying to ID recaros or asking random questions about them and i figured i could help. I run JJ Custom Interior in Tacoma, WA and we actually specialize in restoring vintage Recaros. Over the years i have gathered a wide collection of documents, seats, and parts for these seats and am always more then willing to help in any way that i can. The most common question i see asked is "what seat do i have". The most common seats you will find should be covered in this late 80s recaro brochure. ![]() You can see that each seat has a 3 digit code.. LS, LX, SR for the backs and A, B , C, D - The ls has a larger rolling upper bolster where the lx while similar is a smaller more triangular bolster, these two seats are the most often confused from what i have seen. As for the bases the A base is very flat and was made as sort of a "fat american" base and also the base they used for the early office chairs (still use a similar base today on the office chairs) The B base is prob the most common, it was the standard base without the extendable leg rest where as the C base was the exact same but with the leg rest. The D base is most commonly found on the srd's but can also be found on nearly any model from the a8 to the current recaro speeds. I can go into alot more details but instead i will try to take the time to update my resource guide and post a link here for you. -------------------------- As far as restoration goes if you guys ever need any parts or are looking to have a set refurbished we can def. help. We have new foam, fabric, parts, diaphragms, straps, jackets and many more parts on hand and do all of our own upholstery work in house. Here are some examples of our work... How far back does the chart go? I have a 1970's vintage seat that I would love to know more about.
What do you charge to restore/overhaul one of these? Thx, Joe A

That chart really only covers the 80s-90's. Late 70's are a previous gen but should also be covered.
As far as stuff in the earlier 70's these charts wont help out much. I also have this brochure for the model c's ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by a2coupe2a; 07-31-2011 at 04:51 PM.. |

As for the cost it really depends on the specific seat and the materials used. Can be as little as 500 in some cases and can just go up from there

Beautiful work. I have what I think are a set of LSC's but the headrests contain two small speakers in each. Any idea what era/car they are from? Cheers, John

Gen 3 ls-c's with the blaupunkt orthopedic headrest, very nice. You can tell they are gen 3's because they have the smaller lower bolsters and also have the metal pull out bar for the leg rest. Visually they are easy to confuse with the gen 4's but the gen 4's did not have the bar for the leg rest. They would have been an aftermarket seat as they did not come as factory equipment in anything.

also a cool thing to note about those specialist seats is that you can get armrest for them. Not really useful in your application but can be very nice in larger vehicles.

I have what reads "idealsitz ls(81) and they have some wierd impression on the top portion with wings. I think they were an aftermarket branding the seats with their brand on them. I love these seats though and will probably recover them at some point. problem is they have a hole in the middle of the drivers seat for 5 pt belts and might be harder to cover. Cool though.

well to be fair leather covers are only about 20% leather in most cases so the cost isnt as good of a deal as they lead people to believe.
As for the C's i have 3 1/2 sets here if you or anyone is looking for a pair ![]() Not too sure about the rails. In most cases it would be more cost effective to just replace them i would imagine. |

Your work is awesome. I live in Seattle and I have a 88 Club Sport. It is a rare car and modded tastefully since it came from the factory as a track car. Origionally it had sport seats that had a cloth with "Porsche "woven in. What I would like you to do for me if you can is build me a set of Racaros using the special cloth that I have found
