Alternator / generator bolts to short
Hi, I faced a issues today when installing my new alternator / generator. It seems like the studs/bolts are too short? I dont have the old generator around anymore, I would like to have compared the bolt lenght.
My engine is a 1976 2,7 with 5 blade fan. Is there any difference in generator model's? I ordered a new generator with external regulator. Thanks ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I swapped my alternator on my 1980 SC recently and had a similar problem. Discovered that there was a couple burrs inside the fan housing not allowing the alternator to completely sit in the fan housing properly.

There are 2 sizes of alternators as the depth of the housing is different. I ended up having my original rebuilt as I did not take it to get the core charges. If you di a search there are photos of the diffrrent depths and which alternators fit. Longer bolts dont help as the alternator is too far into the housing and the fan will not spin

It looks like you powder coated the fan. That extra thickness is likely part of the issue.
If you remember, taking the alternator out of the fan requires a couple of 2x4s and a drop of a foot or more to get the alternator out. It is a very snug fit. I would suggest you sand off the paint coating on the inside of the fan and try again. And double check the fan does not rub on the inside of the fan housing. Again very tight tolerances.

It’s been a long time, but I remember when I got my replacement alternator, I had to reuse my old bolts to make it work. Would Belmetric or McMaster have what you need?

The fan and housing may touch with the thick looking powder coat.

I just looked at your first picture again. As mentioned, you need to clean the alternator and remove the powder coating from the inside of the housing, to get the alternators to seat completely. Once you’ve done that, then you can evaluate bolts.
