‘83 SC distributor partial rebuild
Going through my distributor the bushings seem nice and tight with no play, but there is a bit of up/down play which I’m trying to resolve.
When i disassembled in initially for cleaning a few months ago there were what appeared to be the remains of a fiber washer spread around underneath the mechanical advance. Now that I have it more fully apart I’m guessing there was once a fiber washer/spacer between the two stainless washers at the top end of the shaft. ![]() |

In the rebuild kit I got from parts klassic there aren’t any fiber shims but there is a bronze washer/shim that I’m guessing is supposed to go at the top end something like this?

From the wear mark on the gear it looks like it’s sitting very slightly low which would make the slightly thicker bronze washer/shim up top make sense. It would cause the gear to ride slightly higher
![]() That was also what was indicated in this thread from a decade plus back… https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/755343-83-sc-ignition-distributor-bushing-replacement.html |

Perhaps this may help...
Look at this thread from a while back, it has the axle play and shim sequence in the Tech Bulletin Distributor Rebuild on a SC, need some advice

The only thing that seems to make sense at this point is using the bronze shim/washer up at the top of the shaft and then using however many shims down on the bottom to make the play within the guidance of that tech bulletin. I had hoped that the kit would have a new fiber shim to replace the one on the bottom end. I’m gonna stop by my local auto parts store this evening and see if there are any options. |

This thread seems to have the answers I’m looking for…
https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/859923-distributor-tune-up-repair-2.html The only remaining task is to try and locate a fresh fiber shim for the bottom end. I could reuse the old one, it seems to be in good shape but would kinda like a new one. |

Fiber Washers
At the end of the TSB I listed 1 237 010 007 as the Bosch number. Pelican shows it as NLA. I just checked and still find kits online.
