Anyone Use the JWest G50 Coupler?

Does it improve shifting?

Does it transmit more noise into the cabin?

I installed the JWest coupler on my '88 and found that it improved shifts by a more positive "feel". There was no rattling or buzzing noises - no change from the stock coupler in this respect.

Shortly thereafter, I installed the JWest shifter which I highly recommend.

I have the wevo shifter and PSJ. Love it. Increased noise is there but minimal.

It is the next step in the evolution of the coupler. It replaces the rubber solid portion and the arm behind it with a classic pin and block joint. I think it's a night and day difference between the rubber solid coupler, but others may disagree.

I read when I bought my car that the '87s are the noisiest of the G50 rattlers. My car has the insulated shift rod but still rattles under load in 3rd or 4th. It rattles about the same with the PSJ as when I got the car. I've heard 915's rattle worse.

If you can spring another couple hundy, I think it's worth it.

Thanks for this, Alex! Seems like a worthy upgrade.

Incidentally, I found it rather difficult to get the stock coupler back onto the gearbox input shaft. It didn't just slide on easily, and was impossible to get on from under the car. I had to go into the tunnel and push the coupler back towards the gearbox as hard as I could, which caused the gearbox to move from 4th to neutral to 3rd. Then I'd pull the coupler forward, rinsing and repeating multiple times until the coupler walked far enough onto the input shaft to thread the screw through.

The install is a royal *****. Getting that boot over is a ***** too. All in all, not a fun one

The PSJ is easier to install than the G50 beefy coupler.

Welp, I just pulled the trigger on the PSJ

Ordered directly from Wevo - it's $84 cheaper than our host!!! That will decrease slightly when they include the shipping charge but still...

Interestingly, I've never had the tunnel cover off when shifting until now. Check out this vid of the coupler while moving the gear shifter slightly in the 3/4 plane. You can see there is slop in the fore/aft plane at the rubber coupler. I expect either the JWest coupler or the PSJ would help this...

That looks normal to me. I thought the bolts were shoulder bolts and prevented the disc from being clamped up on. It's essentially a 'rag' joint similar to steering couplings of yore. It has some fwd/aft give to be more forgiving on the dogs, etc.

Now I'm staring a dkirk's post with all 4 bolts in. Is this what J-west wants? OE is only two bolts I thought. Seems like adding the new bolts prevents the forward/aft expansion the rubber allows. Huh...

EDIT: Just read the J-west instructions and that is correct per their documentation.

Yeah, the OE rubber is held at the top and bottom with rivets. So if you go with the JWest coupler you have to drill out the rivets and use the supplied bolts instead.
