Relocate Charcoal Canister
I have a 1985 911 ROW that I am upgrading the AC on with the Griffith Duehl-Kuehl condensers. Unfortunately, the charcoal vapor canister is mounted in the LH rear fender. Has anyone ever relocated one of these or is there a different place it is supposed to be placed?

That looks like something home made. The hose clamps and the zip tie and routing does not look factory.
The real canister passes fumes through charcoal so it has multiple in/out pipes, not a single in. It's also in the wrong spot, it should be passenger side in front of the rear wheel. To my knowledge, this is how the carbon canister is on an 85: (Photos by Pelican "Missed Approach") ![]() ![]()

My 85 had nothing in the left rear fender except road dirt. That for sure is not factory on yours. The hose clamps and location are likely from the importer getting it through US emissions of the era.
You will love the cooling of the Griffiths two additional condensers. I put mine in 17 years ago and 77,000 miles ago. It is wonderful to have real AC in my 911.

Thank you all for the replies. I will look at the RH rear fender area to see if there is mounting point for the canister. At the very least I should be able to relocate it there.
GH85Carrera, yes, I can't wait for real AC. I made it until mid July in Memphis heat and cried uncle.

So, the plot thickens. I do have a charcoal canister in the RH rear fender. The hoses go into the engine compartment.
![]() Here is the hose from the LH rear canister coming into the LH front fender ![]() and I believe this the hose coming into the frunk and connecting to the expansion tank. ![]()

I wonder if that’s a rudimentary catch can without any visible outlet or pressure filter and so far from the oil tank.
Follow the hose back to see where it leads. |

Yeah, that’s a common situation when upgrading the AC on ROW (Rest of World) 911s. The charcoal canister placement in the LH rear fender does get in the way of the Griffiths Duehl-Kuehl condenser setup.
A lot of folks in your position relocate the canister to the front trunk area, specifically near the LH strut tower or behind the headlight bucket, where the US-spec cars usually have theirs. You’ll just need to extend the vapor lines appropriately and secure the canister well to avoid rattling or damage. Alternatively, some tuck it further into the engine bay, depending on how much space you’ve got and what other mods you’re running. Just make sure it stays upright and ventilated. It’s definitely been done successfully by others, so you’re not alone in needing to move it. |

Do these things ever need to be replaced/refreshed? seems like the charcoal would not be absorbing stuff after so many years....
