Hey Guys,
I was out running the ole gal around warming her up to check the oil level and I noticed that she well since I have replaced the GHl with a new sport exhaust .. a slight popping sound after I blip the throtle it's only one though.. I can hear a tapping from one of the intake valves on the left side... Would this have anything to do with this problem I also noticed that she is runing a more on the hot side after this exhaust swap as well.. Do you guys have any ideas as to what to start looking for or should I simply re adjust the valves again I had just done then about 3k ago.. they shouldn't need to be done this soon.. but I do think i may have allowed a few to get by me a bit loose.. but I was being cautious and erorred on the side of tooloose rather than tight.. but would this cause this snap/sounding pop after a blip of the exhaust? Thanks guys.. I am a worry head about this crap as she is my only mode of transportaion.. and I reply on her to get me around, and she has never failed me yet.. knock on wood! as I try to stay on top of the mechanicals rather that the looks of her.. TIA! Eric Mckenna ![]()

Dead Hole :-))
Just kidding, could it be extra fuel running in and lighting off? maybe a drippy injector or something. Have you checked the timing? My dizzy lock nut worked loose, the dizzy turned- it was a mess.

Another thought. Possibly you had this problem before but the fuel did not light off beacuse there was no holes in the muff. When the exhaust gasses come out there is no oxygen so unburned fuel will not light off. IF you have an exhaust leak you get oxy in there and it lights off. ANyt chance it is just running rich?

Did you put new exhaust gaskets on the muffler when you install the new muffler or did you reuse the old one? You may have a exhaust leak like Elombard stated.

Eric,
Greetings from Pittsburgh! DId you readjust the CO mixture after you changed the exhaust? Any change in the exhaust will effect your mixture. A popping sound and a warmer running engine could indicate that is it now running a little lean. Check this out. Most likely it is an exhaust leak that is letting air in and the popping is ignition in your exhaust pipes. Noel |

I think it's normal for a pop after blipping the throttle. It's just not audible with more muffling mufflers.

Most popping is from an exhaust leak. Best way to find it is to have someone blip the throttle while under the car.....first w/o any hearing aids....then with a stethescope (Speelchek) to pin it down.
I don't care how expensive an exhaust systeme is....they all need tweaking.

Sounds like it's running too lean, especially near idle. Bad enough and it'll backfire.

Hi,
The best way i found to find a exhaust leak is get yourself a 4ft lenght of tubing ..dont mater what kind , and aprox 5/16 outside diam. Stick one end of the tube in your ear (yes in your ear ) , and then holding the other end run it along the exhaust manifold flanges and any other connection on your exhaust system. If you have a leak the sound will be easily tell tale as you can feel/hear the pulses , and you can pinpoint exactly where it is leaking , then you can either just crank the manifold bolts down a bit to seal , or fix the leak some other way. And the best part is that 'tool' will only cost you a dollar or 2 ! Hope that helps ... - Joe - |
