CIS Intake manifold modification?

I met a guy a few weeks back who used to wrench on Porsche Cup cars back in the mid-late 80s and he was telling me about "a common Kremer-brothers-style modification" of the era to CIS & CIS turbo powered cars.

It involved cutting the intake manifold just above where the fuel injectors are plumbed in and below the injector, but above the flange. Then the injector section was inverted so that the injector points up, re-welded and smoothed etc.

I was skeptical, and told him that I thought the factory would have installed the injectors in the optimum place and angle etc, but he vehemently argued that it worked wonders, due to increased atomization and that they would pick up 10hp or so right away. He'd performed the modification himself.

Now he'd had a few beers, but wasn't drunk. This sounds nuts to me. Has anyone else heard of this? Surely people would still be doing it if it was successful...

I heard that is what you do when you run a second set of injectors. That sounds like a lot of work for 10 hp if it is true. I would rather throw the CIS in the trash. I'll bet that would net you more than 10 hp. :-)
