Installing reinforced sway bar mounts - requesting measurements LWB

Hello braintrust:

My first official technical question as my 71T hotrod comes together ... slowly. No doubt there will be more and I may start a thread once its back in my garage maybe later this year. Currently it's at the body shop. I know my strengths and it is not metalwork so others are performing this part while I gather all the goods for the full reassembly that I will take on myself. I would like to add provisions to the chassis for a rear sway bar, this car did not come with these mounts so we need to locate where they go, knowing that the rear mounted fuel pump bracket also needs to be removed in this case.

The conundrum is that the car is a bare shell on a rotisserie and there is really no way to get the engine and other components installed at this time to check clearances, and it IS the time to do all the welding ... I have collected some data from Elephant and WEVO as a starting place.

Is anyone willing to share exact measurements of their WEVO / Elephant reinforced sway bar mount locations from a 69-73 car in relation to relevant points on the chassis, such as center line of torsion bar tube and other locations? Can this be done with enough accuracy without engine, oil lines, and trans in the car for clearances? Am I insane? (don't answer that) Thanks!

There are usually some dimples that help you place the mounts.

With the sway bar so close to the transmission, I would say you need to wait until it’s installed. The brackets can be installed in an hour.

It would suck to get them installed, only to find out your off by mm’s or more, and have to remove and reinstall them.

But I could be wrong

I got a hold of folks at Elephant, in addition to the printed install guide the suggestion is to install the trans cross member and the bar and bushings to find the location. It was Chuck on the line (if that matters) ... he noted that the crossmember is the closest thing to the sway bar, typically.

Anyone have photos, and ideally with a 901/911 transmission? Thank you.

I hear the risk .. surely cutting the mounts off is far worse after the fact, but the thought of grinding that area back to bare metal reprime, paint, and undercoat with everything installed is also not super exciting. More to consider I suppose

I just completed the task to cut off the torn out stock brackets (not easy to do and also had to cutoff the 2nd fuel pump bracket) and installed ERP brackets on my 930. So, I don't think the photos would help since your car is a 71T. I think you don't need to have the engine/gearbox in place...just the cross member be in place along with the bar and bushings. In my case the bar runs just beneath the cross member which requires 1/4 inch spacers between the brackets and bar fittings similar to prior setup.

In your case...pay attention to how the gearbox and cross member relates to one another in regard to clearances, etc. prior to removing the cross member from the gearbox.
