Converting External Regulator to Valeo Alternator

Hey All. My 1967 is no longer producing a steady high enough charging voltage. When driving the green alternator light is always dim. Sometimes, when the car is just started, it will be off, but as the car warms up, the light starts to come on. Voltage meter reads 12.9-13.2 at 3000 RPM in the driveway.

Foolish me thinks, OK, this should be easy. I see the replacement on alternator voltage regulator assemblies for sale by our host. That part is in my swap-it-and see budget. However, I read rumors of older, different alternators, and I check first.

Took it out and yup, external regulator (and now that I know what to look for, I identified the external regular on the engine compartment wall.)

I am prepared to replace the alternator with the Valeo with the on alternator regulator, but I am having trouble finding the documentation on the wiring modifications.
  • I know I don't connect the one wire from the external regulator. Do I leave the old regulator there or take it out? (There are 3 wires going to the external regulator)
  • I understand that I might need to solder a resistor to the dash light socket. How do I know if I need to and what value? Are there pictures/recommendations of what a good install looks like?
  • I hear rumors of a tech bulletin from Porsche on how to modify the wiring for the external regulator alternators. Where can I find this?
  • In addition to my questions above, is there a general and complete guide available on the wiring changes somewhere?
  • Is there some obvious thing I am missing that I should check or know about?

For reference, My wire colors do not match the guides I have found (but I think I can figure it out based on terminals, picture attached for reference) My brushes seem good? and have good spring back . (Pic attached)

And I know I have not removed the alternator from the fan or fan housing. This was just to make it easier to put it back if I don't get the parts before the drive to winter storage.

Check with our host, they sent me the procedure when i purchased an alternator with internal VR. This was on my 1980 so hopefully they have one for your 1967

There's a reprint of the Porsche Service bulletin on the last page of our install manual. It's in the link at the bottom of this page below Downloads.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing, so appreciate your asking and Jonny pointing. Here is a link to the pdf at Rennlist.

Bringing a slightly older thread back to the top. I too am curious as to how I should wire my new alternator with an internal voltage regulator. The alternator/engine harness has a multiple pin plug that connects to the original external regulator. This includes a connection for the blue wire that exits the main car harness and runs to the dummy light. Do I now extend this blue wire straight to the alternator '61' post? What do I do with the other wires that attach to the multi pin plug? I have looked at the tech bulletin, but my simple brain is still a little confused. Thanks for any and all help.

If our host PP does not have the procedure for a 1966 911 check out this link.
