need help with value of '83sc

I found an '83 SC coupe without sunroof and need help determining what it's worth. It has 84k miles and is on it's third owner. The exterior is in excellent condition as well as the paint and the interior is borderline perfect. The engine runs strong and the transmission shifts very well. I have not had a PPI done on it yet since I am still negotiating on the '88 Cab.

ZAMIRZ 07-10-2003 10:15 AM

I would say provided the PPI checks out, probably 12-$15,000 at most. You can use the less than perfect interior as a negotiating point. Other than that, things that add value to this car are that it is an '83, last year they made the SC, and a lack of sunroof take a nice chunk of weight out of the worst part of the car (the roof).......either way, good luck with your hunt.

Nice looking car.

I'd deduct $1000 for the Carrera badge, though.

krichard 07-10-2003 11:04 AM

Yea that turned me off when I saw it. I really don't care for the whale tail either. The badge and tail would be the first to go. The AC doesn't blow cold as well and is still an R12 system so that will need work. The guy is asking $12,500.00 and it seems reasonable but I and just not sold on it yet.

island911 07-10-2003 11:30 AM

$12,500 !? I would have jumped on that with little hesitation.

That is one clean looking SC. . .w/ clean Sportseats, nice color, and actually appears to be an 84k miles car.

Ask the guy if he has the original rear deck-lid. . . .I agree w/ Brian: deduct $1000 for the Carrera badge.

chuckr 07-10-2003 11:31 AM

depending on the PPI 12.5 is a good price ! it does however look like it has been repainted.

krichard 07-10-2003 11:37 AM

It has had paintwork on the front fender from a "fender bender". The tail was added by the current owner and was put on the original deck lid. That means I would have to purchase a decklid or have this one removed, the holes filled and repainted.

I feel that a nice 1983 Porsche 911 SC is worth about $60 - $70K.;) But fortunately, they are selling for much much less.

I'd like to have a Carrera tail on mine. My deck lid does not have holes in it.;)

krichard 07-10-2003 11:53 AM

hmmmm. Are you propositioning me Superman???

Car looks gay with that bra on. Also...its been in an accident, has a Carerra badge. Id run away from that one. You can do better.

krichard 07-10-2003 12:10 PM

Yea the bra does look pretty bad. I took it off and there are no scratches hidden underneath so that's good. The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards the '88 cab. This one just caught my eye and the price isn't to bad either.

Sonic dB 07-10-2003 12:15 PM

You wont regret a clean Carerra Cab. They hold their values very well and there is nothing like the open sky above you to add to the driving experience.

So true. But the PITA maintenance on a cab offsets these benefit.
If you let it go (read: don't replace the hyper-costly top bits) resale value drops fast.

That cars look pretty clean to me, I concur with island911. I feel it is juvenile to purposely misbadge a Pcar. I saw a SC last week with a Turbo badge, the owner was walking out of the parking lot, I asked him about the car, when it became clear it wasn't a turbo I had to chuckle. Is he trying to scare off the rice boys or what? Sonic, why do you say the car has been wrecked ? Am I missing something or is it because of the rear deck?

Schuey 07-10-2003 12:40 PM

12,500 is a good deal if it has the paperwork...have the necessary updates been done? what about the clutch?

IMO the color combo is nice, but I'd get rid of the whale tail, the car looks like it's been maintained, but you'll need the paper work and a PPI...plus insurance is MUCH less on the SC NEXT YEAR...my '82 gets Classic Car insurance now...much better...the 88 does have the G50, but I enjoy my 915 with no issues, and island911 is right with PITA cab maintenance...with 84k miles you only will have 316,000 miles before you'll have to touch the 3.0

good luck...BTW the color combo is VERY NICE...you don't see it all the time...

krichard 07-10-2003 12:57 PM

The engine and transmission are original. The owner said they have not been rebuilt. He has some of the previous owners record. He said he does not think the tensioners or pop-off valve have been updated. He also said he has not done anything other than oil changes since he purchased it four years ago. He has put 4k miles on it in that time. It probably needs a major service at this point. I drive it today and it feels strong. The clutch feels ok and the transmission feels ok also. 1st and second feel good and go into gear easily. Other than that it is a matter of preference I guess. I truely want a targa or cab but this on has me second guessing what I want.

bsaffin 07-10-2003 01:10 PM

Have you checked the VIN yet? For some reason I'm thinking you could only get the sunroof delete option on the Euro models? Perhaps someone else knows for sure.

krichard 07-10-2003 01:13 PM

I knew there was something I overlooked when I was checking it out. I will get that from him right away.
