New here, need advice on conversion cab to targa
Hi everyone,
New here, I’m excited to join this Porsche community! I’m a big fan of these iconic cars and currently own two: a 2019 911 Carrera S and recently 1976 911 that’s originally a Targa but was converted to a cabriolet at some point. That said, I’m looking to convert my ‘76 back to its original Targa configuration to restore that classic removable roof vibe. Has anyone here done a similar conversion or have tips on the process? I’d love advice on where to source authentic parts (like the Targa top, bars, glass, and seals) without breaking the bank. Also, if anyone’s selling compatible parts or even a donor Targa setup, feel free to DM me or reply here—I’m all ears! Looking forward to chatting more and learning from you all. Cheers, Art |
Art,
It seems like unless you have an emotional attachment to the '76 and was planning on doing a complete body restoration on the car it might be more cost effective to sell it and just find a good SC or 3.2 Targa. |
+1. You will be money ahead by trading cars, and you will be driving the new car, instead of working on or waiting for the old car to be finished. These kind of projects always take longer than you think, even after adding 2x to the time estimate.

Here's a thread about the conversion: https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/971880-cab-back-targa-project-bugbug-goes-back-where-he-once-belonged.html
I think there may be one other on here. This one is cool (but not applicable to your situation). A 993 cab converted to a true Targa: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/1332323-993-cab-to-true-targa-conversion.html Mark |
Thanks for the input on the ’76! I hear you both on how restoration projects can spiral in time and effort, even with extra padding in the timeline. Since I got the ’76 for cheap and have the winter free, I’m leaning toward diving into the restoration. It’s not so much about sentimental value but more about having the time to make it a fun project. I’d rather spend my time wrenching on it than searching for an SC or Targa, especially since I’m not in a hurry to drive till spring.
