Correct clutch kit for 915 trans?
I am about to drop my engine and was planning on doing a throw-out bearing while I had the engine out (lots of clanking sound getting worse when clutch is out in neutral) and see that the sachs clutch kit comes with the T-O bearing.
As far as I can tell, my car has not had any service to the trans since it was probably installed in the '80s or around there. The car is a '70 T but had the sportmatic replaced with an early 915 transmission at some point. So my questions... Should I just get the throw-out bearing or go ahead and get the whole kit including the clutch and pressure plate? Not sure if I need the clutch and PP but "while im in there" should I just do it all? Does this kit fit the 915 transmission (says not compatible with my '70 T but I assume that is because it would have a 901 trans if original)? It is compatible with a '73 MY 911T. Wish PP would put the compatibility on these parts not just model year. https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/KF20001.htm?pn=KF-200-01-INT&srsltid=AfmBOorQP0zJJo6V4a235d0ir73r_oZHoDZ6ivA-eixmejF6qNaqUhpQ#kitsComAnc Any other suggestions on parts I should order now while all the sales are going on? I prob need to do the timing chain tensioners while I have the engine out? Go with OE style? Upgrade to hydraulic? Brand? The Porsche ones are not cheap, are the HT ones worth it ($256 ea Hamburg Technic vs $725 ea for Porsche)?

If you are in there and it's been 30 years since a new clutch etc has been replaced, buy the kit.
Check the rear main seal for leaking, if it is, replace. No idea what tranny you have, but check main shaft seal for leakage as well, and if it's serviceable without cracking tranny, replace. You need to find the serial number of the tranny and cross reference it.

The kit for an original 70 T will indeed be different due to the 911/901 trans. The pressure plate would be the same, but the 915 kit has the different TO bearing and different spline on the disk.
If the clutch has been in the car since the 80s, you might be wise to just replace the whole thing in case the TO bearing isn't the issue. Especially at a little over $400 for the kit. But you could assess the disk and pressure plate once you have it apart, if you're so inclined. Good advice to at least check the rear main seal. Re: tensioners, it used to be a no brainer to do the Carrera pressure fed tensioner upgrade. In recent years it seems like there is more support for rebuilding the earlier style ones. It might be worth doing a search and reviewing the options. |
