What can you tell me about this ski rack?
This was originally mounted on my 78 SC. One end mounts to the bumper and the other to the grille on the decklid. It looked cool, so I’ve been holding onto it with the thought I might get some vintage skis and mount it up when I took the car to meets/shows.
The figment was good so I’m wondering was this a factory option? Otherwise, who could the manufacturer have been. The cable lock is a masterlock, but other than that there’s no branding. ![]() ![]()

Looks similar to the rack I have made by Mohn, just an earlier version maybe. Do a search on eBay, this style seems fairly common.
It works well for skis that fit, most modern shape skis or powder skis are too wide. Luckily skis or a snowboard will fit between the passenger seat and door just fine. I’ve thought about making a custom bracket for wider skis, shouldn’t be too hard.

I had a similar one that attached to the license plate bracket (which is surprisingly strong) instead of the bumper itself -- ended up taking off the rubber strap assembly and cobbling together a setup that used a pair of old yakima roof bar racks to hold my too-fat-to-fit on the rubber strap shaped skis, but ended up simply carrying skis inside as quewhy suggested above

Mine used a piece held onto the air vent holes at the top of the rear windshield, along with a piece held to the vent in the lid like this one. Put studded snows (Colorado allows this) on and a 911 is a great ski car - as long as the snow isn't so deep you high center.

Looks like the Piper I had 30 years ago. Used it on my ‘83 SC Targa to go skiing in Vermont from where I lived in upstate NY at the time.

Instructions, (and common sense) dictate putting the tips facing down... They can catch the wind at speed otherwise... the ones in the pic are wrong.

The instructions don’t say to load skis tips down, not sure if it would work, the bindings go between the two attachment points, long skis would be almost dragging on the pavement. Besides it looks stupid with the tips down. Plus what am I supposed to do with twin tip skis?

I realize you may be coming across lowland freeways at speed to catch a chair, but really? how fast are you going to be moving on a snow laden ski area road? seems to me the sandy road mist would be better suited for the tail end of the planks in the long run. I had a similar rack for my old beetle and the buckets the skis sat in attached to the bumper required tips up. I never did like the ski snow surfaces getting so friendly mounted that way and how road sludge polluted them. most people I see have shovels forward on roof top racks.. I do notice the ones that don't now that you mention it... how should we mount the poles?

Going back to ‘83-84 timeframe. I always ran with my tips at the back/bottom but with the skis in the rack so the binding heel was above the ski rack on the engine grill. Simple additional bungee cord tied the binding down against the rack. My skis were 195’s, the lady I was seeing at the time had 170’s so hers got mounted with bindings between rack mounts so the bindings didn’t hit each other. Many weekend blasts between Binghampton NY and Sugarbush VT at speeds way above the then stupid federal 55 speed limit, at times way way above, and the rack with skis was rock steady. Was always fun showing up in fresh snow in the Sugarbush parking lot in the 911, people were shocked the car could even move, but Metzler snow tires at all four corners and the car was spectacular.

No dog in this hunt, as I would never take my 911 in the snow. I just thought this was funny.

Thanks for all the replies. This is great!
I love seeing the pictures. We should just turn this into a "Show me your ski rack" thread.

Factory rack for coupes. Rear legs are angled and longer for a flat load.
Self serving note: It is for sale in the classifieds… |

Should you ever decide to part with the engine lid ski racks for your 911, would you let me know? Thanks!

Checking back after original 2022 message; would you consider selling this rack to me?
