Are my intake spacers missing?
I am in the process of reinstalling the A/C in my 1987 911 Cabrio. I'm having trouble fitting in the A/C bracket show in the parts catalogue as part number 17. If tightened down, it will push against the injector. The parts catalogue shows a spacer under each intake port. I don't think I have them installed. This would raise up the intake housing and (presumably) provide the clearance necessary. The engine was rebuilt 22 years ago. Is removing the spacers some sort of performance mod? Reduced runner length?

Difficult to see on your pic, but these spacers are partially buried into the shroud and not easy to see. The two gaskets #6 are also needed.
Are you sure you have all the hardware to mount the AC braket, such as the special washers #26? Please show a wider pic of what is rubbing against the injectors. Can't figure it out. |
The insulators sure do look to be missing.

If the spacers/insulators were missing, I'd expect to see some more of the bolt threads protruding through the hex nut, which I don't see... definitely hard to tell with that pic.

I agree with others that if the insulators were missing you would have quite a bit of stud extending through the barrel nut.
On another note your spacer # 26 is upside down, the small shoulder points down. Richard |
The spacers need to be there to compensate for the shorter intakes on the Carrera heads versus the SC intake on the heads.
It’s easiest to pull the right side intake to see what the problem might be. Without the insulator I believe the the intake would crush the shroud. Bruce |

Here is a shot of the injector to AC bracket clearance. As you can see, in stock form it is tight. And yes, I agree with the other posters, with shroud in place, once can't see the insulators plus the stud length issues with no insulators.

As Porscheyard said ^ your #26 spacers are upside down in the pic you posted, which would raise the bracket. Turn the spacers over so the small shoulder goes through the smaller hole in the shroud to lower the bracket.

Yea, in hindsight, my pictures were pretty crappy, these are better. As porschyard and trials935 have pointed out, I put the spacers in upside down. The small diameter faces down and the large diameter faces up. The parts diagram is wrong, as it shows them upside down. Also, the previous owner put them back according to the parts diagram (upside down) after removing the bracket. That agreed with the diagram in the parts book and had me convinced that it was small diameter facing up and large diameter facing down. Makes sense now, the small diameter fits inside the recess of the shrouding, allowing the bracket to move lower, providing a tiny amount of clearance between bracket and injector. I've included a picture of the barrel nut to head stud showing that the spacers are definitely there as there is (almost) no stud protruding into the barrel nut.
