wheel balance weights
Hi All
I have fuchs on my 914/six conversion and keep throwing my wheel balance weights. Have others had this problem and are there any suggestions for keeping those stickon weights in place? best Mark |

probably stating the obvious, but make sure the surface of the wheel is completely free of dirt/grease (use Prepsol, rubbing alcohol, etc.). Might even be a good idea to use a mild abrasive such as a Scotch-Brite pad (then cleaning/degreasing, then sticking the weight). Also, put a strip of aluminum race tape over each weight, making sure the surrounding area the tape covers is also clean/grease-free.

Eric said it all.
Nice clean surface with solvent and then some duct tape for added insurance.

I'm not sure what he means by "aluminum race tape," but duct tape is what a lot use. Not cheap duct tape. There is an aluminum tape that comes from the heating and cooling section of the hardware store. It's pretty shiney. Also, remember to factor in the weight of the tape when re-balancing. I'm serious. A big ole strip of that stuff can weigh a 1/4 oz.

I too was going to suggest the silver Heating and A/C tape, but it seems to me it was thin and light enough not to impact balance. Anyway, it didn't affect balance for me.

I'm not sure about the HVAC tape, but it might be the same thing. The tape I've used is common among racing crews/pits, hence the "aluminum race tape" generalization. I believe it actually originated from/for movie grips & gaffers. It's basically a 3 mil. (not mm.) thick adhesive-backed aluminum foil tape. It is extremely strong, yet very malleable. There is no way a small strip (enough to cover a wheel weight) can weigh enough to throw the wheel balance off. The margin-for-error of the balance machine is probably much larger than that. Also, if you need a "big ole strip" of tape to cover a bunch of weights, you've got bigger problems anyhow. Also just to clarify my original post, my suggestions were meant ONLY if mounting the weight on the inside of the rim. That should be obvious, but I didn't want anyone using a Scotch-Brite pad on the exterior lip of their nice Fuchs!

Never thought about the shiny stuff.
Still, duct tape has worked fine for me. It is DUCT tape afterall....... And it comes in black so uneducated people don't notice it and think you're some kind of rig-job dufus trying to tape his wheel weights back on there!
