Another CIS question
A while ago in one of many 'impulsive' buys and with the (wrong) idea to replace the intake runners of my 2.4T with the ones from a 2.7 I bought a full CIS, the good news is that the airbox is a stainless steel one even with a pop-off valve.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/ss_jr.jpg While I'm in the middle of replacing engine seals and fuel lines I thought that will be a good time to replace the airbox. After close examination the stainless steel one does not have the small tubes where the intake runners go http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/cis_steel_jr.jpg as the original does http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/cis_orig_jr.jpg Two questions: - What are the small tubes for? - Does it matter if the small tubes are there or not? Thanks in advance.. regards |
those tubes are part of the cold start enrichment system. intended to stop the backfire that destroys the air box. not sure if you need them, especially with a pop off valve

I replaced an airbox in my 3.0 once and left out the extra (small) lines that your concerned about. The cold start circuit still worked fine (well, for Florida at least) and my thought was that the air flow was less obstructed with those lines gone.
Nice air box you got there--I was looking for an s/s one when I had to replace mine. Good luck. |
Does anyone sell SS airboxes?
Doe anyone have any other photos? They look cool! |
Thanks guys.. I guess I have some work to do this week (change the old airbox for the new one while the engine still out)
dd74.. I can take more pictures if you want ... don't know the origin/manufacturer of this one or if anyone still sell them but the construction and the welding is very good. I do not expect any performance gains.. but rather the 'cool look' effect. Regards |
I would guess that was hom made but looks good> I would imagine that took a lot of time to make and at todays rates cost about $500 bucks give or take.

Yes, Jordi, please take more photos if it won't inconvenience you. I like the look of stainless steel airboxes. I wouldn't expect any performance gain - just the look factor.
But if they are $500 a pop, or so, I don't know if it's entirely worth that much. :( They're still cool. Thanks. |
