84-85 915 in an 83 SC

Hi,

Will a 915 from the 84-86 cars work with a 3.0L and stock clutch assembly, flywheel, cv joints, and starter ring gear in an 83 SC. In other words is it a bolt in? I think it is, just need to know for sure. All the rest of the external dimensions are the same, correct?

Thanks,

Pat

Given that an '84 dropped right into my '76 Carrera I would say that you should have no problem. On my car I had to fab a clutch cable bracket, you won't have that issue.

It's a bolt-in for sure but that doesn't mean you'll like it. The gearing is different

I don't know much about trannies, but if the '84-85 tranny has the same 7/31 R&P, with a taller first gear, then it might be a nice tranny to start with. First gear is welded to my tranny's shaft, so is not easy to change. First gear in our cars is commonly regarded as way too low. So, if you could take some shorter gears out of an earlier 915, and put them into a later 915 that is geared taller, with the stronger 7:31 R&P, then you'd have a desirable tranny. As opposed to a desirable granny. Pun intended.

Here are the gear charts for both primary variants of the '84-86 915 and the '83 US 915

As you can see the gearing is identical(except for a teeny 5th grear advantage for the US '83)as long as US versions are compared

Thanks for the information, I didn't think the gearing was as close to the older 915.
