Question 2.4 engine mods/ questions

Okay, now that I have the 'perfect' shell (71 non sunroof )I also aquired a mass assortment of engine parts.

I have decided to use the 2.4 cis engine for the car.(other choice is a 69 2.0)
Now what to build? The car will be a street/fun car.

I was thinkin of this:

2.4 with JE pistons using the stock cylinders. 9.8 to 1 ?
SC cams with 40 IDA's , thinking of using an electromotive crank ignition.

Now what do I do with the heads? Cis heads?

It is a 7r case do I have to redo the headstuds and timecerts?

Oil bypass? etc., etc. ?

What hp will i get?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You can build a high compression 2.4 S engine that will put out about 190 to 200 HP. Don't worry, with the higher compression, the S engine will be just fine for the street. (I don't even think the stock low compression 2.4S's were all that bad around town either.)

You already want the JE 9.8/1 pistons. Have them built with valve pockets to clear S cams. Open the intake and exhaust ports up to 36mm. Use 40 IDA's with 34mm venturis.

Do the bypass mod and get a later pump. The case savers are optional with the biral cast-iron lined cylinders but it's always a good idea to do it on a mag case.

The electromotive ignition is overkill, unless you twin plug, then it makes sense. Just get a '73RS distributor to go with the above mods. (If you do twin-plug, then get 10.3/1 pistons.)

Here's an interesting set of Webers for sale on E-bay. I don't know too much about carbs:
Webers

And here's a later oil pump if you need:

pump

I was looking at this type of set up myself, but was able to go a different rounte at much less cost. (won't give me the HP you'll get, but I need to put some $$ into the car)

Good luck!

Thanks Tyson and Jay
Already have the webers, pump is a good lead(thanks).
Now back to the cams, I already have the SC cams and I have a buddy who has them in his 69 short stroke 2.? and he is really satisfied, are these good enough through out the rpms or do I really want the S cams?

Also gonna keep the 901 gearbox.

-Thanks

another piston cylinder option is a "true" 2.4. Bore the cylinders out 1mm to make 85mm cylinders and add JE's (they make them in that size). THat will make your displacement 2.391 or so instead of the 2.341. Not a whole lot but if you're ordering JE's anyway it's dirt cheap to bore out cylinders

Cap'n...I am building a very similar engine. I'm using 10.5:1 JEs and GE60s and MFI. You may want to consider an MFI setup - likely worth another 10hp. I've got a few spare MFI setups, let me know if you if you switch and I should be able to set you up. Here are some threads that have discussed some of the in-and-outs of such a motor and variations on it:

Hi DTW
I know some guys who have the MFI on their cars. Real nice set up. I kinda wanted to stay a little milder than what you seem to be building. Was looking to keep it at the 175 to 210 hp range. Plus I already have the webers.

I know a lot of guys tore their mfi systems off and went webers.
They are unique setups. My mechanic has a 73t with mfi. He says a lot of guys who own them don't know how to drive them or don't drive them enough. For them to run well he says you have to drive them like you hate the car. Beat the piss out of them. And then they drive well.

I took a look at your projects. Looks real good. Hope to follow your progress. I like the name concept. Often thought of maybe a 'spy vs spy' pair myself in the garage. The wifey would go through the roof. They just never understand....

SC cams are pretty tame. They aren't well suited to a small displacement, high-revving engine. SC cams have very little overlap to allow the use of CIS, which is intolerant of valve overlap due to the sensor plate's sensitivity to pulses in the intake. Not a high performance cam by any means. Fine for a large displacement, torquey motor, but kinda lazy in a 2.4.

Cap'n,
As wild as my setup may seem, we'll all be blown away if it breaks 200hp. We're hoping pull like a freight train through the rev range, though. I can't wait to build it. Thanks for following the site. If WAYNE WOULD SUPPORT PASSIVE FTP AGAIN, I could update the site. Lots of stuff is happening right now - "Dr. Jekyll" should be on 4 wheels and under her own power within 3 or so months, assuming I continue to have time to work on it.

The wife had to sign a pre-nup. It said she could have all the money but she had to put up with me being an absolute fanatic about Porsches and Yes music. She pretends to be excited about the Porsche and she went with me four Yes concerts last year, so I think we're in for the long haul.

I agree with Tyson on the SC cams. They're actually a popular item for the Turbo crowd.

Cheers,
