I don't know squat about the mid 70's 3.0 cars. However, the front end screams Carrera to me. The fog lights look Carrera. The lower profile head light washers didn't come on 911's until 80ish sometime. (at least in the US). The rear bumper guards look US also. I suppose they may have been changed to import the car but I don't know. And why doesn't it have the euro side markers on the front fenders??
Anyway, I'd be leary of this car just from the guys write up. Placing first in two events with that Momo'd out interior??

my references show it as a....
1976 3.0 liter European delivery only car.
Peter Morgan's book "Original Porsche 911" puts the production at 1036. I have disagreements with this book. There must be others out there that can tell you more about Euro car purchases. Shawn.

Hi Shawn,
It’s ’76 Carrerra 3, I’ve got one. Great car. They where made in ’76 and ’77. Develops 200HP. When it was released independent tests clocked it at 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. The interior and paint is in really good condition, much better than mine. The rear bumper is not a standard Euro bumper (should look like the green car) and the head light washers on the front bumper are from a younger car. From what I’ve read these cars where not sold in the states because they could not meet emission regulations. The green 2.7 Carerra you are looking at is considered rarer here in Aus than the 3.0, the 2.7 seems to be quite collectable. The 2.7 Carerra develops 210HP and the same torque as the 3.0, but the 3.0 develops peak torque at lower RPM. I think straight line acceleration for the 2.7 and 3.0 was the same… though I’m not sure. From what I’ve heard the 3.0 is easier to drive (torque at lower RPM), though I have not driven a 2.7. Supposedly the 3.0 is a more robust engine but the 2.7 is easier to modify. The ’76 model was the first car with zinc coated rust protection for all body parts. Regards, Andrew. |

It is a Carrera 3.0, according to the engine and chassis number. It was somewhat federalised, with the side markers in the front bumper, the big rear bumper pads. The front bumper and lower skirt are '84+.
Inside it looks '76 all right. Even has the popular (for the time) driver's sport seat and passenger std seat. The tail is from a '78+. The tires are D40 M2, which went out of production about 8 years ago. I'd change them. The engine is VERY interesting, being the last of the lighter ones, andthe first of the stronger ones. GeorgeK |

Hi George,
Yea, at first I thought the tail was a tea tray. But if you look closely it’s an original ’76 all rubber whale tail (same as mine). There is a lot of reflection from the paint work on the rubber that confuses the image. The skirt looks standard?? You're right the side indicators have been added. Regards, Andrew. |

Here is a picture of my '76 Carrera 3 (touring spec) - Cosmetically standard except for the Turbo wheels. It has the big headlight jets, etc. I agree with pretty much everything above, except that the 2.7 Carreras run mechanical injection, as per RS, and C3s run CIS, as per SC.
Also, you have to learn to love the the 'tan' interior in the C3 touring spec cars... ![]() Al G UK |

Hi Andrew,
The all ruber tail as is on this Ebay car appeared in 1978 for the SC, The teatray apeared in '84 for the 3.2 The tail this car should have is the same as the Turbo 3.0, without the large second grill (only a small one if he car has AC). GeorgeK |

Don't want to toss a bucket on anybody's parade, but the green 2.7L 1974 Carrera on ebay is a U.S. spec car with a CIS motor probably putting out 165 hp if it is indeed a California car. MUCH, MUCH different than a Euro Spec Carrera with a 2.7L MFI motor putting out 210 hp.
Also the car on ebay is lime green, definitely not viper green. Still looks to be in nice condition however.

Andrew, the green Carrera Shawn is looking at is a CIS car, rated at 175HP if I recall correctly. The 210HP MFI RS cars were not sold in the US.

I don't personally place much value on collectibility or rarity. They are wonderful cars but I wouldn't consider them rare. (Three people I know have Carrera 3.0's.). In my mind C3's are an early Euro SC with a funny crank shaft and should be priced accordingly.

165/175 HP!!! That's depressing. So basically the green car has a de-tuned 911S engine? You guys got ripped off. Stuff that go for the red car.
George, I think the rubber whale tail was introduced before '78. I've seen 2.7 and 3.0 Carreras with the fiber glass tail and 3.0 Carreras and SCs with the rubber tail. I've also seen an S with the rubber tail. My '76 Carrera 3.0 has the rubber tail and I'm pretty sure everything on the car is original. Was the rubber tail an option? |
