$46 for a key blank?

That's what the dealer wants for the key (without the plastic handle). I guess that's part of the price of ownership. I thought it would be nice to have a spare in my wallet.

There is a vendor that cuts keys at hershey & usually princeton swap meets. I'm sure someone will chime in with his name soon.....

I went to a local locksmith and I had him make me a key from a blank. I think the total was like $5. If you're just looking for a spare, you can certainly get one ALOT cheaper than $45. Mine is for my '82 and may be different than yours tho...

$2.50 from local local smith shop. They have standard Porsche key blank. It's a complete key. I think cutting is another $0.50. I was there to cut my Porsche key(with fob) last month.

The key for an '82 is not a lot different than an old housekey. The key for a modern car is totally different. You won't get one cut for $2.50 either in this life or the next. And $46 for cutting a blank at a dealership is about the going rate. (Dealers, as far as I know, are the only people who can cut them and they need your VIN and proof that you're the owner.)

I suspect that may be the price to get it cut from the records at the factory. I gave my vin number to the dealer and they sent me a key cut in Germany for my car. The $$$ were something similar

Dealer Price

That's about what I paid a dealer to get me the owners key (vs. valet that doesn't lock the trunk or glove box) via the VIN. I think they wanted $25 ish for the key and the rest for cut and profit.

If you have keys that are in good shape and can be re-cut, buy from Pelican and take it to a good key cutter.

The local OSH had a new automatic machine and cut the blank for a couple bucks. Scary though, sure wouldn't leave the keys on the table while company is around.
I'm kind of glad I had to go through so much sh#t to get a replacement doorjam VIN sticker from the dealer.

I assume that this is the key with the chip in it. If so they have to program the key's code into the ECU so it will start. The ECU has 4 'slots' for key codes so you can have up to 4 different keys for the car. The $46 probably includes playing with the computer.

My 85 key looks like any other key. I doubt the 86 has a chip in it.

Well, I called a local locksmith, asked about keys for an 86 911. Says he has blanks; it will run me a whopping $2.75 each! He said the Porsche comes with a "ten-tumbler lock, they are well made"
