No Marks on Pulley...
I'm about to adjust the valves on my 1968 911L and noticed there are absolutely no marks on my crankshaft pulley. Not 1. Smooth. Nothing. ?????? Can it be? Is that a '68 thing or did some brain-wave get tricky along the way and use a pulley with no marks.
I have been looking at both lips of the pulley...on either side of the actual belt and there is nothing. Am I missing the obvious here? |
dude you are having no luck with your car. that blows

Yeah, thanks for the technical answer there. Well done. ;)
Actually I've had great luck with her. She performed flawlessly on the 430 mile drive home down Highway 1. I was letting it all hang out... :D This might just be a case of me not seeing what's in front of me. I'll need to give it a fresh look tonight. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1058981920.jpg |
easy on the sarcasm there my man... I was feeling your pain as a 68 brother. my bad i guess.

the marks on my 73 were VERY difficult to see
but eventually I was able to see them maybe try cleaning it up and look with a mirror, I put some oil on mine so the shine would show the marks |
Scott - my guess is they are there but crudded up to the point you cannot find them. Do as Bill said and try to clean the area up as much as possible - you may mant to use a wire bruch in case any dirt is filling in the notches. On my 87 Carrera TDC is not marked - despite the fact that every manula out there says it should be. My mechanic marked it for me using some red touch up paint. It is a pain to do a valve adjustment if you can't see the marks.

I didn't turn the engine over so I guess it's possible the mark is at the 6p position right now and I just can't see it. I'll clean it and give it a real hard look.
It'll be a big help with the valves and timing concerns I'll face along the way... Thanks all. And Joe I was just playing with you... It's all in good fun. |
Scott:
Your 68 911L looks really nice. What a fun car that must be on HWY1! Good luck with the timing. Be careful "letting it all hang out". And, have a blast with your Porsche. Mike |
With those kind words how can I not post another pic? I took these yesterday as sort of an update..

Scott:
Your 68 is killin me! That does it, I'm gonna have to break out my digicam and take some photos too. Mike |
Last night I investigated very closely and there are indeed all the marks necessary. They are just super faint...practically non-existent. I cleaned them up and am ready to roll. Thanks for all the tips. :)
|
mine were real faint on my 78, put some silver paint on my finger and rubbed the paint down in the indention. then i took some fine sandpaper and sanded the excess paint off. I can really see the marks now.
|
That's a great idea. I am going to do that very thing tonight. ;)
Thanks for the tip. |
