Sealant on tops of shock towers

My car still has the sealant on top of the shock towers. On one side it is starting to crack. Should I remove it from both sides. Any suggestions what would be the best way without hurting the car/paint. Should I just reseal it and what should I use? I have both the Wurth SKS in Grey and the Wurth under body seal in Black but they seem to thin to keep in place until it hardens. The stuff Porshe used almost looks like a paste that when dry turned to a hard rubber. Thank you.....

Use a heat gun and scraper to take most of it off. Carefull when you get down to the paint.

Then use castrol purple and scrub brush to get the rest. Or try orange hand cleaner, good stuff.

To replace a bit neater than the factory did, get some rope type body sealant. You can get this at auto paint specialty shops.

Lay the rope down between the camber plate and the tower, work it down in to seal.

I am assuming it is the same type of tar-based sealant used in the early 70's ... so any tar removal product, such as Varsol or 3M's Paint Cleaner, should work just fine. All of the tar removal compounds I have used are low-volatility, non-harmful to paint, and very easy to use.

I used a blunt screwdriver and "tapped" it off whacked by a hammer....worked better when it was cold in the garage rather than warm..when I finally finished doing this.

Pic with the tar-like sealant removed.

I've considered "re-tarring" in the name of originality, but haven't had the heart to do it.

I don't think it is for rust prevention, since the chassis is painted.

I think it is probably to prevent the possibility of water from coming into the trunk from that area.

Wow, darn nice trunk, SoCal. How long did it take you to do that, and what did you use?

You think the trunk is nice?

Ask him to show you a shot of the underneath of the car.

Downright shocking!
