The middle switch function (foward/rear recline, up/down tilt) of my 12-way power seats (passenger side) is shot. Ordered new switch. Does the seat have to be removed for the switch replacement or is it done from the side of the seat at the switch location? Any idea of how long it should take? This is an embarrassing question when most of you guys rebuild your own motors, but first I've got to start small! Thanks for the help.

It is a lot easier to unbolt the seat and lean it back to gain access to the switch. It is an easy job.

Yes, you can replace it w/o pulling the seat, however the wires might be a bit tight. I took mine out a few months ago because i was having the same problem. I tried to lean the switch, but that did not fix the problem. i now need to figure out if it is the switch or morot, or relay....

I'd bet a new switch isn't needed.
They come apart easily and all that is required is for you to clean the contacts, put some dielectric grease on the contacts and reassemble. I agree that the seat should come out to remove the switch. The wires are connected to the motors which are not very accessible with the seat in place. Plus, the wires are fastened to the underside of the seat with wire ties. Gotta snip them to get the wires and switch out.

KTL is correct...it can be done but it's a bit of a pain.
also, you might need to take the plug apart as you re-install the new switch. Be careful because...proing ! ... all the leads come out of the plug and you may not see how they go back...except for how much of a "bend" they still have, which gives you a good hint. Best if you sketch a small drawing as the plug comes apart. If you're careful...with the seat tilted...you can do this. ---Wil Ferch

I repaired two switches last night. Both two-way switches on my 87 all failed. I remove the seat. Separate two electrical connectors, put the seat side way and open both switches. There are four tabs on the side you have to press in to open the switch. Don't pull the cover with force. Romove the metal contact. All the contacts have burning marks. I clean the contact with sand paper and Dremel tools. Put it back. Both switches works. The motors are still good. I was happy with the result.

This same switch (up/down, recline) on my '86 only works in the recline to-fro mode. The seat UP/DOWN function is not working. Do you guys think it's just the switch or motor? If it's the motor, does it share motors with the other fuction (recline to-fro)?

It has two separate motors. One for the front and one for the back. I actually have a brand new switch from the dealer. I was just going to replace the switch. To replace the switch, there are just so many parts to remove. I just changed my mind and try to fix the switch. You should start checking the switches.
