VDO Speedo: Repair or Replace

Hello all:

I've got an '87 Euro Targa with the kilometer speedo. The odometer portion packed up a few years back so I had it overhauled (the gear train was totally destroyed). It has now quit again.

I'd like to keep the car as originally fitted but would like opinions as to whether a series of VDO overhauls is the way to go or if a reasonably authentic and reliable substitute might be a better option.

If the latter, what would it be and where would I get it? Does it just attach to the existing leads?

Regards

D the P

The odometer will continue to go. Generally they go because the trip odometer is reset while the car is in motion.

Don't reset the trip odometer unless you are sitting still, it uses a plastic gear and will continue to break from time to time, but the rest of the speedo should be fine.

There are a lot of threads on this. I found them because I had the same issue. I just installed my new gear and it was pretty easy. Maybe this will work for your '87.

Thanks, that's helpful.

mr.bch, does the speedo dissassemble easily or are there "issues" for the ham-fisted?

Geting the rings off is a little tricky at first. You just pry it off with a couple of screwdrivers. But the ear is right there on the end and held in by 1 'E' clip. Small, but not hard to do. For 29 bucks, try it. I can post some pics of how I took it apart, if you want.

I'd like to see the "how-to" photos of your speedo repair. I need to replace the gear in mine as well. Thanks!
