Gear shift selector rod
Hi all !
I was cleaning the carrera yesterday and while I was in the back I took the shift coupler cover off and to my surprise it was like new in there. not even any dust! but the thing I did notice was some side to side movement in the shift rod, is there meant to be any play there?? any clues? thanks Steve. |

There's an article in an old issue of Excellence that explains the upgrades and fixes you can do here. It's very common for bushings in there to wear out. I don't have the article anymore, but someone here must. New bushings will make the shifter much more crisp.

This is the front shift rod bushing I had made
![]() Zero play the 2 bronze pieces remove the slop from the stock coupler ![]() The other mod I did was to the early shift tower ![]() Just makes it easier to remove slop here, '77 on already have the nut adjuster.

You can also use 914 coupler bushings from our gracious host. They are the same shape as the bronze ones shown. No slop. That's what I used.

I've already replaced mine with plastic. Those bronze bushings are by and far superior to the plastic bushings.
