installing center belt anchors w/o welding
Get some 3/16 thick angle iron (2" x 2"). Cut two pieces approx 2.5" long. Remove the carpet and shift cover on the center tunnel. Feel around on the underside of the tunnel between the shift couple opening and the handbrake- looking for obstacles- wiring, cables, fuel line. Drill one hole for each angle piece thru the tunnel in each non-intereferenced area. Preferably 10mm or larger. Drill one hole on each leg of the angle iron- grind edges smooth , paint them. Get large washers and bolt, pass thru from the underside (the washers that come with seat belt harnesses are fine) Bolt each piece down. Bolt on your harnesses, cut the carpet to fit- race regularly and enjoy
Make sure all hardware is at least 8.8 or better |

Dave, thanks for the suggestion!
The tunnel seems very cluttered, but I'll see if I can fit your suggested reinforcement in there cheers, Jeroen

You ARE the man. I'll be implementing this on one or both my cars. Outstanding suggestion, thank you very much.

I did something similar when I added retractable belts on my '69. I used a short length of heavy square tubing (perhaps tow hitch tubing). I drilled two holes; one vertically through one wall, another horizontally through both walls. Mount the sq. tube onto the center tunnel with a large bolt and back it up with a large hardened seat belt anchor washer and nut. Install as close to the factory location as in the later cars. You may have to jury-rig a holder to start the nut out of finger-reach in the tunnel.
The horizontal through-bolt and lock nut contains the seat belt receivers, nylon and steel washers on either side of the sq. tubing. The lock nut provides the correct tension to keep the receiver assembly from flopping around. The seat belt receptacle boot contains all of these pieces. Size the fasteners accordingly for this purpose, probably minimum 7/16" or 14 mm. Another option is to install the receptacle on the seat track or seat bracket. That way, the seat belt anchor moves with the seat in any position and maintains a more ideal belt angle with your hips. Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |
