Need help with 68S(Long)

I have two problems with my 68 I hope someone can help with. The first is the car is hard to start when hot. The alternator light was on all of the time when I bought the car. I had the alternator and voltage regulator checked and found out the regulator was bad. Bought new regulator and the light went out, well almost , in the daytime it looks like it is out but at night it is still glowing a bit. I charged up the battery and thought every thing was fine until I tried to start the car after it was warmed up. Could it be a bad ground somewhere?
Second prob is the engine will not go over 3500 to 4000 rpm when going down the road. The motor is brand new, or so the former owner told me. I tend to believe him , the motor is very clean and he gave me the old set of cylinders and pistons. When I went to look at the car he took me for a ride and it did the same thing. His explanation was the fuel pump was going bad. Sounded reasonable at the time. LOL I just put on a new fuel pump and guess what, it didn't fix the prob. The car starts easily although I can't seem to get the car to idle correctly. when I get it to idle at the right speed and rev the engine then the idle is way to fast. So I think that the carbs need rebuilt. The linkage doesn't seem to be binding anywhere. Could the carbs be the cause of the engine not wanting to go over 4000 rpm? The engine pulls good up to that point and then it seems like it runs out of power. The owner told me he timed it by ear, so it could be a timing issue. What do you guys think?
Thanks for the help

First of all the alternator light on the early 911's always have a dim glow at night. Don't know why they just do. The hot starting problem could be bad ground, bad starter or battery connections, bad solenoid, bad starter, timing off or a bad battery. The not going over 4000 rpms could be timing or fuel or air starvation. Might also be that the throttle plates are not opening all the way. By the way, where you live in Kansas?

Hah, do you think they launch the Space Shuttle "by ear?" Don't trust the timing...

You were right Wayne. It was the timing. I tried to set the timing according to the manual that I have. There are three marks on the crank pulley. ZR1,30, and 32. Is it correct that the fan housing and the 30 mark should line up at 6000 RPM? No matter which way I turn the distributer I can't get the marks to line up. I did find a spot where the car runs smooth and pulls strong to 5000 rpm. The 32 mark is just to the left of the fan housing mark at 6000 RPM. This is my first P-car so I really appreciate the help.

RM,

The marks on your pulley are Z1[TDC], 30° BTDC, and 35° BTDC ...

It sounds like your distributor is in need of some TLC ... you REALLY need to check the advance curve! I suggest reading the following thread:

distributor lube...

As mentioned above. The mark are 30 and 35. Using a mirror it is easy to mistake the 5 for a 2. I just had my dizzy rebuilt and car revs like new. Only cost $65 buck to have it done. Had it back in 2 days. No bobbles or flat spots. I have my timing set to 35 BTDC. This is striclty for track use however.

Could be related. Doesn't the warm up regulator also relate to control pressure in the system?

I'm just shootin from the hip here, I'm a carb guy...
