Crane Ignition 72T
Hey everyone
Excuse the bump on an old topic, but I'm ripping my hair out I'm having trouble with my 72T. It had the Crane (then Allison) optical trigger with the xr700 box installed by the previous owner back in 85. The car is now suffering from an intermittant miss, sometimes just a stumble during acceleration, others it will hardly run, sometimes it runs fine... VERY frustrating!!! so my question is, if there is an XR700 box installed, is the stock ignition even hooked up?? or is it bypassed?? I don't want to just wildly throw money at the car replacing good parts..... Please Help.... ![]() |

To my knowledge the Crane box only acts as a trigger, replacing the points and condenser. It is still hooked up to the CDI. Check all the wiring from the diz to both the CDI and the Crane. Have you checked the timing? Does it advance smoothly? I have the same set up on my car so if will help I guess i could send you a wiring diagram or digital picture.

Right, my system is just the opti trigger. I still use the cdi.

Crane XR-700 replaces your point, condensor, but still requires Coil and any of the other "stock" ignition components.

Start simple, what's the condition of the Cap, rotor, coil, wires and plugs?
When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? Are you running carbs, when were they cleaned last? If you are running carbs try cleaning the jets out, both the main and idle jets can be cleaned without removing the carbs from the car. Drain the float bowls (look for sediment when you drain them). Any additional information can help us point you in the right direction. -Justin

Thanks for the reply guys...
there are three components in my system (I think) 1. optical trigger (inside the distributer to replace points) wired directly to: 2. xr700 unit wired directly to: a) Power (red wire to middle post of three post fuse block on left side of engine bay b) Ground (purple wired directly to engine case) C) Trigger (split into two wires) one looks like it goes to the tach (maybe), the other is wired to a braded insulated stock loom... is this how yours is set up??? targa911S do you have an XR700 on your car or does the optical trigger go straight to the Bosche unit |

I run the crane on my 72'. The optical trigger replaces points and condensor, the xr700 replaces the Bosch C/D, you use you stock coil. Your optical trigger should be mounted on a bracket inside the dist. that allows you to move it with-in the dist. When I installed mine, I left the dist. in the normal position, and moved the optical trigger on the bracket until ran correctly. If the opitcal trigger is not in the correct postition with-in the dist., you will experince a misses at higher rpm's and intermittant flat spots in the lower rpm's. The purple wire on mine goes to the tach. I remember that much, I check on the other wires when I get a chance.

Picture's worth a thousand words:[img]
