SC A/C spitting black foam bits . . . ??

My '83 SC has been running perfectly, but a week ago the A/C (replaced a year ago with the rotary unit) began spitting tiny black foam pieces out thru the vents.

The first batch was a bit oily (white SCWDP t-shirt splotchy, but it washed out), but lately it's dry . . . tiny . . . bits of black foam.

I'm not a wrench, but I did check out the engine compartment -- nothing seems out of line -- I didn't see anything that would contribute to this problem (but it was a quick, cursory look).

I've done a search of the archives here and found zilch.

Has anyone experienced anything like this, heard of someone else's similar condition, and/or has an option about repair?

Cheers!

Thats the seal that keeps the air in the system. It got old and is falling apart. It is likely from around the evaporator and/or the vents behind the dash.

Yeah, you're going to want to eventually pull the evaporator box out and clean and re-seal everything. As long as your A/C is still working OK and you don't mind the occasional piece of foam "shrapnel" coming out at you, I would leave it alone. To do it right, you need to have the system evacuated, pull, clean and re-seal the box, then have a vacuum pulled on the system then re-charged.

Thanks, guys -- sounds like that's the problem. The A/C is cooling great -- I can certainly deal with the occasional naughty bit . . .

Cheers!
