SC A/C spitting black foam bits . . . ??
My '83 SC has been running perfectly, but a week ago the A/C (replaced a year ago with the rotary unit) began spitting tiny black foam pieces out thru the vents.
The first batch was a bit oily (white SCWDP t-shirt splotchy, but it washed out), but lately it's dry . . . tiny . . . bits of black foam. I'm not a wrench, but I did check out the engine compartment -- nothing seems out of line -- I didn't see anything that would contribute to this problem (but it was a quick, cursory look). I've done a search of the archives here and found zilch. Has anyone experienced anything like this, heard of someone else's similar condition, and/or has an option about repair? Cheers! C. |

Thats the seal that keeps the air in the system. It got old and is falling apart. It is likely from around the evaporator and/or the vents behind the dash.

Yeah, you're going to want to eventually pull the evaporator box out and clean and re-seal everything. As long as your A/C is still working OK and you don't mind the occasional piece of foam "shrapnel" coming out at you, I would leave it alone. To do it right, you need to have the system evacuated, pull, clean and re-seal the box, then have a vacuum pulled on the system then re-charged.

Thanks, guys -- sounds like that's the problem. The A/C is cooling great -- I can certainly deal with the occasional naughty bit . . .
